Taking Utrogestan while bleeding
« on: January 29, 2014, 04:58:21 PM »

Hi

Can anyone advise me please?

I finished my first cycle of estrogel and Utrogestan 10 days ago and I'm due to start my next batch of Utrogestan on Friday. I have been using it vaginally.

At the moment though I am having a very heavy bleed (first one for a while and probably because I increased my estrogen dose in December to a level which was too high). I doubt I will have stopped by Friday.

Presumably I can't use Utrogestan whilst I'm using a tampon and anyway, my bleed is so heavy it would just wash out if I used a towel.

Should I try to take it orally? Or as a suppository?

Any advice much appreciated before Friday!

Hi Chrislm

Oo-er not had this before....not nice to still be bleeding when it comes to take it again.
My bleed always comes after finishing the vag use. Are you still peri?

What dose of Utrogestan have you been taking? I presume perhaps 100 mg if you are using vaginally?

I haven't come across anyone using as suppository although I used to use Cyclogest for several years and these were designed to be used as either pessary or suppository but they were fairly hard wax capsules so easy to insert. Might be a bit tricky (as supp) since Utro capsules are small and soft?

If you are on 200 mg Utrogestan, I don't think it will matter which you do, but if on 100 mg vaginal dose I would take two if you decide to use it orally to give the standard cyclical dose of 200 mg.

Have you consulted your doc or specialist?

Hi Hurdity

Thank you for replying again. You are so good!

I am using 200mg of Utrogestan and my bleed started 5 or 6 days after I stopped taking it. So I have been bleeding now for 4 days and it will be 6 days by Friday, assuming I am still bleeding then. My periods always used to last a week so it wouldn't be unusual for me to still be bleeding on day 6.

I am pretty sure I am still peri. I certainly was 7 months ago when I first started taking HRT.

Apart from hideous pains yesterday and the day before, I have felt absolutely great on estrogel and Utrogestan. I think the heavy bleed is because in December I changed from 1mg of Elleste Duet to 2mg and this dose was much too high for me. I switched to estrogel after about 2 weeks on the 2mg tablets and then had 12 days on the gel before I started taking the Utrogestan. I think the high estrogen caused the build up which I'm now shedding! I don't know why it took 5 or 6 days for the bleed to start but it could just be the changes I made over the last month or so.

If I haven't stopped bleeding by Friday I might try the Utrogestan orally and see how I get on. Hopefully things will settle down next month or the one after and I can revert to vaginal use again if my bleeds come sooner after stopping the Utrogestan.
