Menopause and migraines
« on: January 22, 2014, 12:43:20 PM »

Hello,
I have a patient who is 46 years old, and has an FSH of 44, on subdermal implant, so hasnt had periods for many years. Having hot flushes, so would like HRT. However, she has current migraines without aura, but sometimes needs to use triptans to control it.
Is HRT contraindicated or what are your thoughts?
Many thanks!

Hi there, see my post from yesterday.  I am just waiting for a referral re. my hormonal migraines and have been told the consultant will probably recommend hrt so must be considered suitable.  ;)

I think the bio-identical, transdermal types of HRT are recommended for ladies with migraines - they are generally considered better anyway.  So, Oestrogen patches or Oestrogel with Utrogestan (micronised progesterone) to protect the uterus.  Have a look under the heading 'HRT Preparations' in the list to the left of this screen.

Also, if you are a health professional there is a section on this site that you can access for more info and advice.  It is near the bottom of the headings to the left of the screen highlighted in purple.  Dg

Hi olivia_c

:welcomemm:

What's a sub-dermal implant?? Do you mean of implant of estradiol? If so I wonder why she is getting flushes?

As Dancinggirl says it is not necessarily contra-indicated and transdermal is preferred
On the A-Z of medical conditions on this site (blue menu) it has this to say:

Migraine
Migraine is often triggered by hormonal fluctuations and therefore may occur around the time of a period. Such migraine may improve at the time of the menopause. Some women find that migraine may be triggered by the daily hormone fluctuations which can occur with oral (tablet) HRT so the transdermal (patch or gel) route is usually preferred with a history of migraine.

Hi ladies

I was put on hrt patches everol conti thinking it might help with my migraines sadly it has not made any difference I had migraines before I went on hrt anyway but thinking it might help but no I take zolmitriptan  when I get them which is the only thing that gets rid of them my neurologist said that I should get them less as I get older and go through the menopause but I'm now 55 and still suffering I have come off hrt for a rest but got the hot sweats and  so moody because not getting my sleep so I'm going back on it and put up with the heads . I came of it to see what my body was doing but I have had a headache every other day since and hot sweats so can't win

Any advice would be appreciated
