increasing hrt patche
« on: January 18, 2014, 11:41:05 PM »

I started on Evoril Conti 1/2 patch about 3 years ago, about 1 1/2 years ago i put it up to a full patch as i felt some symptoms were creeping back. For about the last 3-4 months i have felt this happening again so i telephoned the meno clinic. I was told that they did not do a bigger dose than the 50 patch and that maybe i could go onto tablet form of hrt. I am reluctant to take tablets as i take a few for various other things and also have stomach problems. I asked her if i could put another 1/2 patch on with my full one and was told that i could give it a go and see how i got on.
Now after all that what i wanted to ask was, have any of you ladies tried this and what was the outcome ?
I have just increased it this week, so not noticed anything yet. x

Not tried it myself (yet) but my doctor said you can get a 25 patch.

I thought they went up to 75, but I could be wrong. I have tried an extra bit of patch but just ended up feeling sick and very jittery so gave up.
I am now cutting my conti patch down in an attempt to tick things over at the lowest possible amount. Hopefully that way when the time comes to stop completely it won't be so hard. One can live in hope. ::)

Thanks for the replies ladies. It was the menopause clinic that runs this site that gave me the info on the patches.
Don't know what to do now  :-\ will give it all a bit more thought. x

Dumfries area then. Lucky you, our meno clinic has been closed for two years now.

Maybe have a look at the green menu as it shows you what's available and in what strengths.

I have noticed that there does seem to be a lot of confusion on what strengths these patches come in. I was also told 50 was the highest by my NP! I would have thought this would be common knowledge for clinics dealinf with meno! Let us know how you get on jgr! I'm interested in everyone else's experiences with the patch as well!

Have a great day!  :sunny:

I'm on Evorel 75 patches so don't know why they said they don't exist!
I was on 50 and the meno clinic here in London upped my dose. It does seem better tolerated than the pills.
A friend is on 25 so if they'll give you a 50 and a 25 that might work? Odd though

I'm definitely going to ask again about the 25 or 75 patch. My 50 is not working and hopefully my NP will give me an increase somehow! I am finding all of this very confusing!!! ???

Hi there

Evorel conti only comes in one dose ie 50 mcg oestrogen along with the progestogen.

It is the Evorel patches (ie the oestrogen only) that come in the various doses - it's all in the menu on the left under HRT preparations.

Some while ago I contacted Dr Currie about this - ie increasing by half a patch and I think the question and answer was also put into one of the magazines but I can't remember which one.

The upshot is that I think it is OK to do so even though not licensed because the progestogen works on thinning the lining in a dose dependent manner - ie the more oestrogen you have the more progestogen needed. Also norethisterone - the progestogen in Evorel conti - is the most powerful one I understand.

I agree - you should not have to go onto tablets if you don't want to!!

If it's Dr Currie's clinic then maybe you can ask to see her rather than the nurse - because it is likely the nurse cannot do anything off licence?

Alternatively you can change to separate oestrogen and progesterone - but the progestogen would no longer be taken transdermally - the two options available are micronised progesterone (Utrogestan) - which is bio-identical with our own - or Provera - and you would then have to get used to this to see if you tolerated it.

Oestrogen patches come in several strengths from 25 mg up to 100 mcg.

If you are OK on the Evorel I think your best bet would be to seek approval for the 1 1/2 patches as above.

I went to my NP yesterday and asked her about the strengths of the patches. She wasn't sure either so I insisted on an answer and she finally contacted the pharmacy. The do come in 75 and 100! Yay, I am now going to try the 75 to see if that makes a difference for me! I am hopeful that I'll be able to get off the anti-depressant soon!
