Just had a long weekend in Florence:
Fabulous city, very calm feeling even though it was very busy.....much more serene than Rome and Venice but just as beautiful
We stayed right next to the Ponte Vecchio which meant we were less than 10 minutes from everywhere. Easy to walk around but please remember your flats, the cobbles tend to bite
I booked a guided tour at the Uffizi gallery, we arent terribly arty so I was unsure if it would be way over our heads, but it was very interesting. Our guide basically gave us a history of art lesson looking at some of the most interesting works of art and explaining them to us, I had never realised that you had to 'read' some paintings - very worthwhile and of course you beat the Q
We also had a trip into Chianti shire to see Siena amazing small town, medieval. Of course we did some wine tasting too...but this was over lunch, so very civilised
The duomo is an impressive building, we never did make it inside !!!
The restaurants we chose went from the obscene to the ridiculous. The birthday dinner was in a fabulous place overlooking the Arno whose speciality was 'raw' fish. Now I love sushi and oysters etc but the raw red Sicilian prawns really left a lit to be desired...a bit slimey
Other meals weren't quite so adventurous, but by avoiding the main 'tourist' squares it is not expensive -relatively speaking - to eat
A great weekend.... Where next ?
