Whats happening to me
« on: January 02, 2014, 10:13:34 AM »

Hi I have been having severe!! lower back pain (only when I am lying down!!) for quite a long while now following physio it was thought that the problem could be Gynae so GP stopped my oral contraceptive (Cerazette) stating at 52 I actually no longer needed it.  I was to have a blood test to see if I have actually started the Menopause. So... Three months since stopping the mini-pill I am having a few probs with temp (always been a cold moral due to underactive thyroid - so hotter temp is quite nice actually x
headaches, joint pain in all my fingers (where has that come from) very weepy and very scared all the time, I feel as if something very bad is going to happen.  This, I feel has all started since I stopped taking my pill three months ago - can this really happen - I had the blood test and received a call from GP Surgery and booked in for appt next monday - to discuss options??

:welcomemm:  if you are having periods you need some form of contraception.  It is wise to continue until you have not had a bleed for at least 18 months, maybe your GP explained this?  Are you taking medication for the thyroid?

I expect now that youa re not taking The Pill your body is regulating itself, plus your age  ::) ....... aches and pains are common during these changes, I have low back pain which is mainly postural so looking at how high your heels are, how you sit at the table/computer/watching TV .......

Hi - Thank you so much for such a swift reply x  I am currently taking 100mcg Thyroxin each day.  I had a quite intensive treatment with physio and did actually go back to the office and make big changes to chair and computer screen :) as I say no problem with back at all during the day - just as soon as I lie down - unable to turn over without extreme pain which obviously wakes me us throughout the night - he he shoes well I have never been able to wear high heels (much rather be on the ground lol)  The GP stated that it was extremely unlikely I would get pregnant now (no periods for quite some time) and did not recommend contraception at all.  I think my biggest shock is how fast all these symptoms have come on.  I don't want to treat this as an 'illness' as I am aware this is the next stage of my life - but would like to handle it correctly x once again thank you for replying x

Hi missy

 :welcomemm: from me too.

Have you considered HRT? Your symptoms sound like typical menopause symptoms so it would be beneficial to change from the mini pill to HRT which would give you the oestrogen your body is likely to be deficient in, and eliminate or drastically reduce your troublesome symptoms.

If you decide to go ahead, and need any advice as to which type to go for then do ask us as between us we have experience of lots of the different types of HRT.

In the meantime there is a lot of really useful information about menopause on this site to read ( menu on the left).

You are right - it is not an illness, despite what some doctors would have us believe. It is a hormone deficiency, and how you choose to deal with it will affect how you cope with this next stage in your life!

Good luck!!

Hurdity x

Missy sounds like you may have sacroiliac joint inflammation or even a mild disc bulge( where and tear) discomfort when lying down and pain when turning over in bed are typical symptoms.

You must mention this at your appointment and your GP will want to investigate and send you for tests.

Also another reason for discomfort could be an impinged nerve, these symptoms are completely separate from hormone problems and I feel should be treated separately.

If you have been period free for 18+ months then you probably do not need contraception but the time since your last bleed is important.

Have you had a recent spinal X-ray?  I have low back pain which bends me double sometimes, it's not excruciating but does cause me to go 'ouch', also I have (tea is ready, must dash!)
