Norethisterone
« on: December 16, 2013, 10:57:34 AM »

I have just got back from the doctors and she has prescribed me with norethisterone.  She said to start taking it at the weekend if my period doesn't stop before then.  I think she thinks I want to stop the period for my holiday next week.

Having read all the side effects I don't want to take it.  I suffer with anxiety anyway and really don't need the risk of the side effects.

Do you think that it would be ok for me not to take it and rethink when I get back from my holiday?  I can put up with the bleeding but obviously wouldn't want to continue bleeding if it was damaging my health.

I feel in such a state, I just don't know what to do for the best.

toffeecushion, the only example I can give you is that of my sister, she has always suffered from anxiety and depression, quite a few years ago she was prescribed  norethisterone (this was for too much bleeding) when she told me I immediately though that it would effects her moods and was surprised when she reported that and said she got on well with it.

Another case of us all being different

You could delay taking it until after your holiday, or take it and if it causes your mood to plummet just stop, its either one or the other and only you can decide.

If it were me I would be inclined to follow the doctors advice, then at least you could say I gave it a go.

I had to take northisterone for a year while waiting for a hysterectomy it was the only thing that stopped constant heavy periods. If anything for me I felt much calmer taking it although I did get a lot of bloating from it Im sure you will be fine with it for a short time.

Why not give it a try. You can stop if it doesn't suit you. It's over a week till your holidays and it could be just the thing to help you. My daughter was given this to help with very heavy bleeding in her early teens and she was fine.

Toffeecushion I know you are like me & hate side effects. I would go with it. Who knows the anxiety could all be hormonal & it might really help lots of things not just the bleeding. Take it & don't think about it. I often think the side effects listed could all be a bit exaggerated sometimes. xx

Thanks for your replies.  The doctor said to start taking it at the weekend so I still have a while to go, maybe I won't need to take it by then :)

Hi Toffeecushion

I have also been prescribes this, although I am not due to start taking it for a few weeks yet, I have the same worries about it as you as I suffer from anxiety and depression too. I have decided I will just go along with it and see, although these are nasty things to suffer from and believe me I do, I just think if its not for me I will just stop taking it.
Good lunch with it and please let us know how you get on

xXx
