Weight Changes on HRT
« on: December 15, 2013, 09:21:38 PM »

Hello ladies

I've been on HRT for coming up to 1 month now. For the past 5 years I've noticed an increase in appetite and have gained weight as a result. Since being on HRT my appetite seems to have reduced, recently by quite a lot. I'm now eating 'normal' portions rather than overeating and I can really tell when I'm full and listening to my body. As a result I'm losing weight as couple of stone overweight.

I've made no other changes to my lifestyle so can only think it's HRT related. I'm not complaining at all of course :) but wondered if anyone else has experienced this. Has my overeating of recent years been hormone related because I've been in perimenopause?

Have others appetites reduced and lost weight since starting on HRT?

Most complain of weight gain on HRT not weight loss. However, I think weight changes at this stage of our lives naturally whether or not we're on HRT.  I've got to work hard to lose weight, although over next couple of weeks, I'm throwing caution to the wind & will eat all the fancy stuff & start afresh in 2014.

I would say it's early days yet, but if you're well enough in yourself,  then all the better!

Thanks cubagirl. I have also read about weight gain on HRT and was worried about taking it as didn't want to put on more weight. I was unsure if the weight gain was typical for women going through the menopause rather than directly related to HRT intake.

I know my question may see really odd and I was a bit unsure whether to post or not. I've  wondered if it is psychological  in the sense that I feel better so not comfort eating but it isn't that. I love food but recently my appetite has noticably reduced.

Ah well I'll just see how it goes. Maybe it's just putting me back where I should be at my age had I not got POF.

Hi

I experience weight changes on HRT! I'm 5'2 and 8 stone so I'm not very big at all and every little bit counts. Some days I have an appetite and others I don't. I tend to fluctuate approximately 3 pounds each way. It's very frustrating as any change is noticeable and people always assume that because your slim your happy! Well not in my case I would love a few extra pounds just to fill my clothes out.

Hi ladies,

For me gaining weight was one of the biggest fears. Being a big girl as a child and being taunted scarred me for life. When I got older, I lost loads of weight and got to a happy size 10.
Over the years, just before the HRT kicked in I went up to 12.
Worst was around the belly and hips and severe fatigue etc.
It also affected my stomach, which gave a acid reflux, which increased my appetite.
After starting the first trial of HRT I lost a bit of weight, but then put a little back on. Stayed a bit plumpish, but since I came off that regime, I dropped half a stone in about 2-3 weeks.

The HRT did affect my appetite, as again set off my stomach(acid probs), not my happiness.
Hormones for some people trigger messages to the brain to eat, for some it doesn't, however, they work different for all of us.
Food means different things to different people: example some when stressed eat a lot, others the opposite. I am in the opposite category, more stress less food. Some comfort eat during sad times, others eat when they are happy, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that hormones do play a major factor in weight control.
I guess, what I am saying its a combination of the two, but hormones are major, considering they also affect our psychological and emotional well being as well as physical.
