restarting vagifem
« on: November 13, 2013, 10:20:56 PM »

hello ladies
after weeks of not using vagifem after bleeding and pain from fibroid i have decided to restart it

my va and prolapse are so much worse
i am hoping the benefits will outweigh the cons?

i have stopped bleeding (still waiting for biopsy results after hysteroscopy) and i just hope i won't be aggravating any problems i have

after reading other posts i have come to the conclusion that vagifem shouldn't interfere but there are differing opinions but because of my va and prolapse symptoms i don't know what else to do?

made apt with doctor but can't get in until 25 november!!

any advice would be great

thankyou xxx

Hi anderina

Sorry to hear you are having pain and bleeding as well as everything else with the VA.

I posted in detail before about this and provided the evidence that I had found.  I repeat that I found no evidence that Vagifem (in the short term) will have any serious effect on fibroids but the advice given in the leaflets was the same as that for full HRT (just as the same leaflets warn against the risks of breast cancer etc). There are few data on long term effects of Vagifem (ie beyond 12 months).

The most important thing with Vagifem to prevent any absorption beyond the vaginal tissues, is to make sure you do the initial loading to thicken up the vaginal lining. So this means using it every night for 14 days and then twice a week thereafter.

It sounds to me as though your fibroid is quite bad so that it probably needs treating anyway as soon as possible, and I presume you are having this possibility looked at ie treatments?

In the short term anyway you will want relief from the VA and bladder symptoms which will come much quicker than any possible (unlikely though it is) negative effect of Vagifem

I don't know a lot about fibroids but have started reading about them and I see there are different types, and possibly because of this they react to the female hormones differently if they are structured differently and this will depend on the hormone receptors in the fibroid. It all sounds quite technical and I haven't got very far yet! This doesn't help you though!

However if you are really reluctant then start the Vagifem but at your appointment ask for Orthogynest pessaries which will do the same job and will not have any adverse effects whatsoever as far as I understand.

Hope this helps

thank you hurdity
i am presuming - even hoping - they are going to offer me some form of surgery in the future and this is what has made me decide to restart vagifem

i also feel reassured by some of  the posts on here about side effects etc

i am not having as bad a time of it as others but when things happen to you they matter don't they?

until i came on this forum i always thought menopause was just your periods stopping! oh how wrong i was!!

i am 54 and keep thinking "what next"?

I thought the same anderina - really and I've studied Biology so no excuse! As far as I knew it was just that - skipping periods, a few hot flushes - then bang - all done and happiness reigns. Haha!

Suzi - I just keep saying the same thing - but always hoping to learn more if I can

Glad you are noticing a difference anderina - yes that's right do ask them to treat it if it's bothering you, and read up all you can about the different treatments for fibroids before you see your doc.

hurdity you do seem very knowledgeable i really appreciate your advice!

Wonder when i go to the docs if she has heard of MM? (see what she has to say??)

Day off work and I honestly cannot be bothered to do simple jobs, used to think i was so lazy but having read other posts i realise its yet another symptom, also very slight anxiety but not enough to worry about at the moment

going to go food shopping but just want to sit here and drink coffee!
