Bleeding early on utrogestan
« on: October 27, 2013, 08:44:26 PM »

Hello this is my second question of the evening - I'm on a roll!  ;)

Started on utrogestan a few months ago and have found it much much much better for me (I was badly progesterone intolerant on the synthetic progs I tried before)
utrogestan makes me much less irritable anxious and wretched, but still has slight effects.

However, since I've started my regime, which is 12x days of utrogestan monthly, I've always bled on day 4 or 5 of taking the Utrogestan - not after the 12 days finishes if you see what I mean.
I mentioned this to my meno specialist and she didn't seem concerned at all - but I'm just worrying a bit (As I said - I still get a bit wobbly on the utrogestan and Im on day 7 now  ;))

Does anyone bleed early on utrogestan (sorry, question mark on my keyboard has died  ;D)
Does anyone know what it means if you bleed early

About 3 weeks ago, in the middle of my oestrogen phase, just before I was due to start the utrogestan, I started what felt like a normal period, like 'my own' period. It was unscheduled, but it was a proper full period, so I presumed my own hormones has overridden the hrt and so didn't take the utrogestan phase (no point as I'd bled properly)...
Anyway, fast forward a couple o weeks and Ive started the utrogestan again, am now on day 7 and no bleed... :-\
Could it be because Ive not built up much or any lining because of my period a few weeks ago

Just when I thought I'd understood this HRT lark, im thrown into quandary again....

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any advice

Clovie (the question-mark-less one  ;D)

CLovie:

I take progesterone all the time so I don't have any experience with withdrawal bleeds.  However, I do think that you haven't had much time for the lining to build up again to have a good bleed, maybe just some brown staining, if that.  If you were still in perimenopause when you started the HRT....your own natural hormones may be overriding any of the HRT you are taking.

I'm sure someone will come along soon to better answer your questions, someone who takes progesterone on a sequential basis.  Hang in there and don't worry to much yet!

Hi clovie

I think you are bleeding early on the utro because you are still peri (if I remember correctly?), as andius says - your own hormones may be overriding the HRT.

Don't worry about the different time of bleeding - this is fine! However if it happens again I would still take the Utro when planned because this is opposing the oestrogen that you are taking in addition to your own hormones, so if you missed, there could be the danger of some additional build-up. Having said that if your own cycle produced a lot of progesterone it could have all been shed!

This is what it says on the summary leaflet:

Shortening of the cycle or breakthrough bleeding may occur. If this occurs, the dose of Utrogestan 200mg Capsules can be reduced and taken at bedtime from day 1 to day 26 of each therapeutic cycle.
http://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/19896/spc

I have only ever bled on HRT after withdrawing from the progesterone with all the types I've been on - but that is because I must have been fairly close to menopause when I started HRT.

Thanks hurdity, yes I am still perimenopausal.
Will try not to worry (I'll be less paranoid after I finish the Utro. Mind you, not complaining, any partanoia I get on utrogestan is miniscule compared to what I was like on the other progesterones  ;)) xx
