Systemic twitching
« on: September 27, 2013, 08:28:09 AM »

Hey guys,
It's been awhile.  Last period was November 2012 and I was actually doing quite well.  However, although I've experienced twitching on and off since perimeno began it has been bothering me more so  since the periods stopped.   Unfortunately I had another period on the 23nd September ( It is almost finished now) but the twitching in my feet, calves, eye, hands and other places has really flared up and is really bothering me.  I went to the doctors about the twitching that seemed to be getting progressively worse up to the run up to my period and she did all the neurological tests in the surgery - strength tests, reflexes etc, - she didn't seem worried.  Since my period they are worse which isn't helping my anxiety.

My question is -  Have any of you had this horrid twitching?  Do you think it's hormone related?  Should I go and see a neurologist?  I am really worried I have some awful disease.  Feeling so crappy today  :(    By the way - migraine is also back!

hi there  :)

I've had random but annoying prolonged twitching before in various areas and its a pain.
of course I too thought I had some kind of progressive disease  ::) - but when you read up on it , it is far far far more likely to be a symptom of stress or anxiety instead. holding muscles taut and tense but not realising it can cause fatigue and twitching apparently?

are you stressed at all? well, any more than the average lady coping on a hormone rollercoaster?  ;D

funny enough when I'd convinced myself it wad actually stress (I was a bit stressed  :o) it all stopped.

alternatively could it be a shortage of some vitamin or mineral? take some good supplements and see if it improves?

I'm sure your doctor would have referred you if he/she had been at all concerned.

not trying to dismiss your worries at all here though, by the way.
see how you go on?

good luck! x

Hi there,

I too get this twitching that's usually worse before and during my periods but I didn't realise that it could be hormonal.

I hope that you get some answers soon xxx

Hi Clovie,
I don't think I'm anymore stressed than the average person, but the twitching is making me anxious -- I'm trying to relax and distract myself but I'm very aware that the twitches are there... mostly it's in my feet and leg muscles and periodically in my arm and eyelid....Have a splitting headache for the last two days two -- After suffering (and I mean suffering  :-\) with perimenopause for years and then having a nice long break from periods I was doing so much better...  I just feel crap again now though.

I've been taking chelated magnesium for several weeks and now magnesium oil which I massage into my legs and feet.  I've just ordered some ultra muscleeze (it's a high concentration of magnesium in powder form)  I'm hoping it helps.  My main worry is a disease that's progressing ---  did you have any tests?  I haven't been referred to a specialist yet -  I'm thinking of waiting it out to se what happens  but I have made an appointment to see my doctor on the 7th October (long time to wait but she's really good and popular with patients) ....

Thank you for your post  :)

Claire,
Do you get a low grade twitching that becomes worse just before and after a period?  Did you have any investigations?

Hi there,

Yes I get random, intermittent twitching which does seem to get worse before and during my period. I tend to keep a diary these days listing symptoms etc and there does seem to be a real pattern emerging.

I've had loads of investigations over the past year or so due to other issues so I'm putting the twitching down to hormones.

Will bring it up with my gp next visit.

Hope this helps. Take care

Yes. It helps. I feel a little more reassured.  Thanks, Claire. x

I've had this for about six months now, since before I started HRT (which hasn't helped it at all). It's like muscle tension all down my right side, and sometimes my leg twitches. I also get terrible restless legs when I'm sitting at a computer (which is bad because that's what I do all day at work!).

I was worried it was something serious, but I'm sure it's stress related since it gets worse if things are bad at work.
