HELP again re utrogestan
« on: September 26, 2013, 07:38:57 AM »

Hello,  Well just finished my first month on estradot patchs and 200mg utrogestan for 12 days. I had a bleed 3 days after stopping the utrogestan but was very heavy and painful, apart from that this combination has suited me much better then previous combined patches.
My question...I go on a trip of a lifetime to Australia in November and continuing on this cycle I will bleed my first week...as I will be touring and doing water based activities i would want to not bleed. Is it possible for the month before I go to only use the estradot and hopefully miss a bleed. Then start the utrogestan again the following month or should I maybe take say 6 days of utrogestan and have a bleed a week early? I know because I have  a uterus I need to take combined but would missing a month do any harm?

It will be fine, some people only use it every 2 or 3 months, so go for it, and have fun. x

I'd think you'd be fine.
The reason for this from a personal experience was that I was suffering greatly on the progesterone phase of my first lot of HRT with BAAAAD Pmt symptoms (It was synthetic prog) . It was absolutely awful.
I went back to my GP and she happily gave me 3 month cycle HRT where you just take the progesterone phase once every 3 months.
Unfortunately I was awful on THAT progesterone too as it was also synthetic. I awaited an appointment at the gynae clinic and I asked if I could forego the prog until I saw the specialist and I was told yes.
So it seems to be OK to miss for a period of time, for me - 3 months, so I should imagine skipping for one month would be fine.

Our Hurdity on here knows an awful lot about progesterone and Utrogestan and I'm sure she will be willing to give her opinion if she sees this thread.  :)

Have a brilliant time in Australia!! I'm dead jealous!!!  8)

Hi Libralady - I don't know that much but happen to use the same combination.
My only view is that - as you are using Utrogestan cyclically, are you still peri or you post-meno and choosing to stay on a cycle?
If you are still peri and were still having periods when you went onto the HRT, then maybe you will get a bleed at the time you would have done anyway because your natural cycle may still be strong.

If you are definitely post-meno then there would be absolutely no problem - but I would probably then take the Utrogestan for a few days more (when you return) if you missed a month, just to make sure you shed all the lining.

You could try for an early bleed like you suggest - but again if you are still peri perhpas you will also get some sort of bleed - hopefully though most would be shed.

It is very difficult to predict if your cycle is still active!

The other alternative is to start the progesterone and just keep taking it in the hope that you will delay the bleeding completely - the continuous progesterone will eventually prevent the lining from building up further and what is there will only be shed if you stop. You mught not want to take it continuously though - especially not at that high dose...

Sorry I don't think that's very helpful is it?

Whatever you decide I hope you have a great trip!

Oh yes there are also synthetic progestogens you can take to delay periods eg norethisterone - but for many women there are unacceptable side effects - and you definitely wouldn't want these on your hols!

Thanks all for your help. I am about to turn 53 and I was still having periods last year, started hrt in December as I was having horrendous problems with night sweats, painful joints etc etc
I think I will miss a month of utrogestan and hope for the best  :)
