Sequi vs Conti
« on: September 22, 2013, 01:34:08 PM »

The general rule of thumb is if you are over 54 then you can have a conti HRT which means no bleeds. This also applies if you have gone a year with no period.
Other wise you need a sequi HRT which will give you a bleed.

Does anyone know why this is so, ie, would it matter if one was still having a bleed even if you are post menopausal or over the age of 54. I am not sure that I would like to have to take continuous progesterone and was just wondering if there is a medical reason why the general rule of thumb is indicated? Thx ladies..

Cassie I can't think of any reason why you could not  continue with  sequi HRT if it suits you, to my mind its healthier.

I think its because some ladies over a certain age don't want to be bothered with a bleed each month.

I'm 59 and have tried both. I returned to sequi HRT as I hated the progesterone all the time. It was up to me and the doc said there was no medical reason to have conti. The important thing is not to have conti when you really need sequi.

Thx ladies, that is a great relief. My Dr did mention @ some stage, changing my HRT when I reach 50, he did not elaborate and I did not really pay attention, so was worried that he may be going to want me to go the conti route.

There are birth control pills that are of the no bleed type. Some young women  find its great not to have a period. If you can tolerate constant progesterone then why not. It can take a little while to settle. Nature says that periods will stop at some point so why would you want to carry on having a period.

I know it's what some women prefer but it is going against what the body should be doing naturally.

Some gynaes prefer women to have a conti HRT when they are post-meno because I am told it reduces the likelihood of endometrial hyperplasia and therefore womb cancer. However the incidence of this is very small I think.

Other gynaes believe you should minimise the amount of progesterone you take due to a possible increase in breast cancer risk (although this is from the famous studies which have now been re-visited).

However provided you are diligent and make sure any untoward bleeding is checked out and ideally make sure you have a uterine scan regularly, then this can be monitored.

Like Taz I don't like to have progesterone continuously but I am wondering how far into my 60's I will continue to have a bleed!

Honeybun - naturally, women's bodies do not bleed post-meno - but then nor do they have enough oestrogen so I feel that it is equally acceptable to take our replacement hormones continuously or cyclically since neither is "natural" as such! Would you agree? It is of course a personal choice....

Yes Hurdity I agree. I just hated having periods so have been quite happy to not have them.

I guess it's all down to personal choice and weighing up the pros and cons.

I know what you mean - I hated periods too - but these are not at all like the old ones - very light and barely noticeable ie no period pain - which is why I can tolerate them!
