hi.....has anyone else taken this anti biotic.?  I had  it for a week for a tooth problem and felt totally wiped out on it. I have been off it 4 days and still feel washed out and wobbly. I was warned it was a powerful antibiotic but I am just a bit worried I srill feel grotty even though I have finished it! Any other experiences on this? Many thanks x

It is a powerful broad-spectrum anti-biotic, so it tends to wipe out the 'good' bacteria in your gut as well as whatever 'nasties' it's supposed to be attacking.  If you can stomach them (some people can't), eat/drink probiotic yoghurts/yoghurt drinks for a few days to repopulate your gut with the good stuff.  And get plenty of rest - your body has been through a war!

Antibiotics continue to stay in your system for a few days after you finish the course so although it was 4 days ago you took the last one it probably lingered longer (!) than that.  Just be kind to yourself, lots of rest, healthy food, water.

Take probiotics in the stronger capsule form.  I had to take it for diverticulitis and it, too, wiped me out.  Awful stuff.  Never heard of it for tooth problem, but that doesn't mean much.

I took it a couple of years ago for a tooth problem as well and it wiped me out too.  It's one of the stronger ones I think and can take a while before it's out of your system.  You also shouldn't drink on it (or for a while afterwards) as it will make you very sick.

Flagyl is known for wiping out bacteria responsible for gum disease, tooth and gum problems and and bacterial vaginosis  (otherwise known as 'fishy fanny!')     it can make you feel sick and wiped out, and you must not drink alcohol when taking it or it will make you feel very sick (my dentist told me even red wine in M&S steak pie can do it!)  I recommend probiotics too...will repopulate the gut.

My husband took it for 10 days for C Difficile, caused by a 2 week course of other antibiotics. His tongue went white and he was wiped out.
Still has the afters from the C Diff too, but it's a very strong AB.
He was put on to VSL3 probiotic by a specialist. It's a terrible price but it's helped. Not available on the NHS in England, but I think it is in Scotland.
Specialist says the probiotics you buy off the shelf are not good and many of their live bacteria aren't actually alive!
Those Actimel and Yakult ones are of some help. The ones you keep in the fridge.

Yes you have to wait forty eight hours after finishing the course before drinking any alcohol. It is often given to recovering alcoholics to stop them drinking.

Having mentioned the negative points of this antibiotic it does work very well in most cases and is quite specialised. It is a really good drug and is used to knock out anaerobic bacteria which I think are bacteria which survive without oxygen. It is especially useful for brain abscesses and bone infections.

I had it once for a gum problem and surprisingly got no side effects from it although I expected the worse as, usually, I do react to things. However the second time I took it for a recurrence of the gum problem I broke out in a dreadful rash and my fingers began to swell up a few hours later and now it's down on my notes as something I can't have - better not get a brain abscess then!!
