mirtazapine
« on: August 12, 2013, 04:06:13 PM »

Hi to everyone, I haven,t been on here for a while as I was having a long spell of feeling good, after ongoing anxiety , depression and crying spells. I came off Prozac two or so months ago at my GP'S request and started to feel like the old me again, to my sheer amazement. I did have  a prescription for Mirtazapine but resisted taking it as I was feeling so well- then , you've guessed it- wham, all of a sudden back came the old anxiety, flat feelings etc, just when I thought I was sorted, anyway have started the mirtazapine- been on it for a week now, 15MGS, and am not too bad with it apart from feeling spaced out  and very dopey and tired in the mornings, and while the anxiety is better than it was, I still keep feeling the sense of dread and still some depression- I was just wondering how well it has worked for others, I do know that Dyan, you were on it- just starting I think last time I posted- has it eliminated the anxiety and depression? Would be interested to hear  how anyone has got on with it at the 15mgs dosage.

Big Hugs to everyone-Mags :)

Hi mags,
Yes you're right I was just starting the Mirtazapine.
I have done very well on it.
This was prescribed for anxiety and it started to work from day one.
In the early days I too felt spaced out and dopey in the mornings but this wore off after about a week.
My anxiety was always worse on waking in the mornings but the Mirtazapine
sorted this out almost straight away.It made me feel calmer.
After the first week I was feeling a little better.
The depression started to lift within about 3 weeks.
I was really surprised how quickly it worked.
I saw my GP again at the end of the first 3 weeks and,as the medication was working ,she kept me on the 15mg.
She could see a difference in me straight away.
By about 4-5 weeks I was completely better and I am still on them and am happy to stay on them.
I sleep really well now and feel good.
My GP has put me on repeat prescription and I'm to let her know if things change.

Hi mags & dyan

I'm also on mirtazapine 30mg. Anxiety was my biggest problem too. I found it had a calming effect straight away, it knocked me out for nearly 2 days so yes i was very calm!!. I still had blips where i wasn't as good for a week or so and even now 2 years later i get some anxiety first thing in the morning.  The spaced out feeling does get better as you go along.

Hope it works well for you mags and you start seeing improvements.

I had a slightly different experience with mirtazapine, which I took for quite a few years.  It DID help me sleep - but didn't help that much with my depression or my anxiety.  I went on it because of problems with side effects from SSRIs.
I also put on a lot of weight with mirtazapine as it has a well recognised effect of increasing your appetite.

Hi Kes, and sorry to hear  that the mirtazapine didn't work well for you- I posted about it last week as I had just started on it and was worried about  whether or not it would work-well, have been very up and down since starting it just over two weeks ago, today and most of last week have been awful with high anxiety levels and very depressed- I have been crying non stop all day and in bed as I felt so miserable- I did have one decent day(Sat, just gone) but the rest of the time has been pretty much on the downside- The GP did say that things may get worse before they improve, so am wondering if that may be the case. I am sleeping ok ish but having anxious dreams and waking still with the anxiety and dread and feeling rather groggy. Am desperately hoping that things  will get better soon as  I really  want to feel like my old self again- would be very grateful for any positive input- Mags :)

I was offered it too (for sleep) but the doctor said weight gain is very common. A close friend of mine has put on 12kg while on it  :o

Hi mags, I started on anti depressant since being peri menopausal, mines a trycyclic one of the side effects is sleepiness, I take mine about an hour before bed, at first improvement was slow and very up and down. I been on them around 2 years and for the vast majority of the time they have been a god send. At the moment I feel they are losing their effectiveness, so I'm keeping an eye on things in case a change is needed.

If I can remember correctly I think improvements were subtle, but as time goes on you will find you improve on a month to month basis. That's how it was for me, hope this helps . Anxiety is horrible, and quite hard to explain to people who haven't had it. x

HI JJ,  and thanks for your very helpful post- I'm sure that you are right when you say that improvement is usually slow and up and down- I have been on two other AD's in the early stages of meno- first cipralex which didn't seem to do a single thing, then Prozac which wasn't much better for the anxiety  and depression'. I will keep plodding on  with this new one and see how it goes, many thanks again for your kind words-Mags :)

To Bev, Littltminnie  and Daisie, thankyou so much for your lovely support- Bev, I am on 5mgs Diazepam twice a day but am worried as I have been on and off it since last Dec as my GP prescribed it with HRT and she has given me further prescriptions- but she still says it,s ok to take-I don't want to get addicted. I take 50mgs sertraline in the morning but don't have diarrhea- just the nausea and no appetite which is compounding the anxiety- I will try to eat something and see if it helps-It's also good to know that i'm not the only one who can't get out of bed-I have been told by so many well meaning friends and family that I should get up no matter how bad I may feel- and it just doesn't work for me. Good Luck Bev with the CBT and big hugs to you all-Magsxx
