When I was diagnosed in 1998 with IBS I was suicidal. I felt so sick, bloated, nauseated - my body was hungry but my gut had forgotten how to push food through my system. I never had pain fortunately. The rolling action had almost stopped .......... fortunately my GP was able to give me medication, Motillium and Colpermin peppermint capsules. The latter to aid any wind in the upper gut, the former to ease food through the system 'quicker'.
Within 3 days I felt better. It took another 3 months to get into a regular 'habit' and I took that combination of mediction for 5 years before someone suggested Actimel. Which also works. the trick was to take the Colpermin and Motillium within the hour of eating my main meals: i.e. before breakfast - yeh, right

; before lunch and before our evening meal. It meant meal times were very regimented to fit in the medication regime and his family hated it! I used to carry my own foods with me when we went visiting

and would slip away to take my meds and then eat within my time scale.
I told them to treat me like a diabetic in that I HAD to eat on a regular basis. Now if I don't have Actimel regularly - I take my medication with it at 9.00 p.m. ; withina few days my bowel has slowed down. My Mum uses another type of 'yoghurty' drink whcih works for her. The point is to take it at the same time every day so that the gut gets used to receiving it. It's the feeling of needing to 'go' but not being able to do so
