How much weight gain?
« on: July 10, 2013, 06:43:43 PM »

Who is brave enough to say how much weight they've gained during the menopause so far (if you have gained weight that is)? I used to weight around 10.7 stones at the start of menopause 2 years ago, now I weight 13 stones, so a big gain which I'm not proud of. I have cut down on what I eat but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I really don't know whether we can blame meno for this or just a slowing down of our metabolism as we age and are not so active.

I have not gained anything but I eat a lot less now than I did when I was younger. I am so used to not eating a lot now that it's just routine. I am not much over 5 foot tall so every pound looks like two. I was determined not to be a wee dumpy woman that I made my choices early and adapted my diet.

hi i dont mind saying i too gained 2 stone, not happy about it but i also think its a case of not being so active as well.  My 3 sons have now left home so no chasing around after them, washing, ironing, cleaning etc that must have used up alot of calories, plus with the aches and pains i don't do half what i used to ie walking round town to small shops, butchers, veg shop etc now i just use a supermarket as its more convenient although i don't like the produce as much.

I put it at about a stone.

I never used to put weight on till I was 52, was 9 1/2 stone. Can't tell when meno proper started cause I was on the pill.
Stopped the pill at 54, no periods since. Weight really piled on since then now 10 1/2 stone, even though I'me eating and exercising the same.

I definitely think it's due to a slow down of the metabolism, plus the effect of HRT.

I've put on about 1.5+ stone since periods stopped 6 years ago - have always eaten / exercised the same but the weight gain has been steady, year on year.  Often I cut down and eat less but it doesn't make any difference whatsoever.

Twice I've stopped HRT, for 3 months each time, and I did lose quite a few pounds - so for my constitution, HRT does have some steroidal effect.  However, I don't think if I stayed off HRT I would return to 9.5 stone, body fat distribution is now very different.

I have thunder thighs and bingo wings now, my body shape is totally different, dammit, I hate meno!

I was 10 & a half stone before meno, I am now  12 stone 4 lbs  >:( >:(., but nearly 3 years ago I did manage to give up smoking & 1 & a half stone went on because of  that.

I have never been a very active person & have shunned exercise most of my life (it hurts, & I don't like pain). :D

For me it has been estrogen, when off it a few years ago for about 18 months I went down to just under a eight stone normal weight for me according to BMI chart, I had always been small and very slim, since I went back on it I have put on at least a stone, even a small amount of hormones puts weight on for some women, I think I am one of them.

They are after all female steroids, there main purpose is to build tissue and fat for fertility, also endogenous hormones are not the same as our own native ones.

I know I gained weight when I went on HRT but the nurse reckons you can't.  I also gained a good couple of stones when I quit smoking nearly 9 years ago.

I too put on over half a stone but think I just ate too much ,plus not having to run around after children anymore. Have done the fast diet and it removed it  quickly , still do 1 day maintenance a week and so far weight has been stable ,no fluctuations. If you can cope with a day of feeling a bit hungry its a small price to pay for eating a reasonable amount of food for the other 6 days. Have also had holidays and not fasted a t  all and weight was same on return . Its a great feeling to have found something that controls the weight without having to think about it 24/7. :)

I am about 3/4 of a stone heavier than when I was 18 so no I haven't put on any weight in meno.

This is because I have completely altered my diet and I won't tolerate growing out of my jeans or going into a bigger size. I have been larger before I was meno - but have always gone on diets and lost it do that I don't get too big. I am age 60 and also small - about 5 foot and maybe 1/2 or 1 inch so like honeybun any extra weight shows, and I never would let myself be a small fat woman. Now I am 9 st 4  lbs but medium frame so I do not look fat at all.

The difference in meno is that my thighs are slimmer but any extra fat is around my middle. However I hide this with wearing flattering clothes and of course HRT keeps my boobs as they were so still in proportion. I regulate my diet by eating main meal from a small plate and rarely eat cakes, biscuits, sweets, choc, sweet drinks or fat but enjoy my food and I am not fanatical about it. I could eat more of the above if I took more exercise which I keep meaning to do one day!!!

Also my work involves standing in front of large groups - workshops - so I have to look OK otherwise I would be self-conscious!

I think I would put weight on if I ate as much as I did when I was younger....if I over eat on any day then the next day I try to under eat....like a mini fasting day. keeps my weight steady and I feel better eating that way.  If I put on weight I don't like how I feel and all my clothes feel tight which I hate...

I notice any extra fat seems to be on my stomach area and I have a little tummy bulge which I think has happened since ive been on hrt..

Hi all
I'm afraid to say over the last two years i've put on about 31/2 st.  I dont think its the hrt or just meno, its more from eating what i like when i like due to feeling so bad for most of the time. Also had to give up work which was quite demanding and helped keep my weight down.

I'm now on the road to losing the weight, dont intend to go through another summer feeling this uncomfortable in this heat  :hotflash: . I have to say though i dont feel embarassed about my larger size as i know theres a damn good reason for it!! And for some strange reason hubby seems to like it. Told him to make the most of it while he can, its slowly disappearing  ::)
