Post-menopausal-Still with hot flushes!
« on: January 28, 2013, 05:46:40 PM »

Hi all, this is my first post. :)

My doc told me I am now post-menopausal after 8 years on the menopause. But I'm still getting hot flushes! I was hoping they'd stop. I can't go on HRT as I have the V-Leiden clotting factor so I could get deep vein thrombosis. I'm 50.

Can anyone tell me how long I'm likely to get flushes for. They're not very bad now but wake me at night.

I have welcomed you on your other thread but, hey, Welcome to the Forum  :)

There is no answer as to how long flushes go on for. Some women never get them and some get them for the rest of their lives unfortunately. It is good news that yours are not so bad now.  How long is it since your last period?

Hi Taz,

It's been about three years since my last period. I'm now looking at phyto-oestrogens, like tofu and milled flax seed, and will probably have them as a breakfast smoothy with soya milk and a banana! Is there a section on here that discusses the merits of phyto-oestrogens?

If you look at the menu on the left of the screen you will find Alternative Therapies which includes phyto oestrogens.

Hopefully your flushes will get less and less. It seems to be that symptoms worsen for around two years after the last period and then gradually disappear again - apart from vaginal dryness which doesn't seem to get better once it starts!

Thanks Taz. My doc told me this morning that women who suffer hot flushes all their lives are rare. There's still hope! I'll be starting Citalopram in the next couple of days and she said the hot flushes should stop with that. Wish me luck!

Hi Valkyrie,

I'm a newbie too and just starting to adjust my diet to include more phyto-oestrogen foods.  Would be really interested to hear if you find it makes any difference.

I *think* I'm post menopausal as no periods for over 3 years and my hot flushes/night sweats were 5-6 years ago, however with the onset of dryness (VA) came lots of hot flushes again too (and the odd night sweat with waking has returned).  I've started taking Menopace to see if that helps as I'm not on HRT as yet.

Good luck with the citalopram too and hope it reduces them.

I haven't started the Citalopram yet as I can't afford to be out-of-action with the initial side-effects yet. I'll poss start it this week.

Another doc said I couldn't be post-menopausal yet as I still have hot flushes, so here's still hoping.

I tried my phyto-oestrogen breakfast this morning and it was quite nice! I made a smoothy with:

1/4 of a 396g block of plain tofu
Enough soya milk to blend
About two tbs oats (low in phyto-oestrogens but adds slow-release energy)
1 banana (sweetener and slow-release energy)

I blended these in a hand blender for making baby food, then added more soya milk. It was really tasty and creamy! I love the taste of oats in it.

I didn't add milled flax seed as I hate the taste.

I'll let you know how it goes. Mind you, the Citalopram might stop the hot flushes anyway! Why don't some of you try my smoothy and see if it helps your hot flushes. I'd love to find out!

As it has been three years since your last period Val then you are post menopausal - once you have been a year without periods then you are termed "post". This is often when the symptoms begin so I think your doc has been misinformed. It stands to reason that once you are post your hormone levels have dipped and will continue to dip as you get older causing more symptoms in some women.

I would try your smoothie but I have an allergy to soya. In the early stages of meno and perhaps post meno then the supplements do seem to work but it seems that most women on here who start off on supplements do report that after a while they stop working. It is such a fine balancing act!

I agree with Taz2, and have just posted on "All Things Menopause" to mags about clinicians recognising post-menopause symptoms. We don't fit the text book mould, and the symptoms seem to be disregarded as "impossible", but clearly this is not the case, and it makes me mad with the "one size fits all" attitude!!

Sorry I've not been on for a while!

The Citalopram has been great for general nerves but not for hot flushes or anything else. I completely forgot about my meno drink! Silly me. I'll try that each morning. I also saw a thread about nerves and queasiness in the morning which have worsened for me, so I'll up my carbs. (http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,15459.0.html) I'd reduced them to help lose weight, but I have been overdoing it.

I went to a clinical herbalist and her treatment helped for a while then stopped.

I've now been on meno for 10 years. Here's hoping it'll stop soon! Thank God for an understanding boss! His wife is going through the same thing.

I have a feeling that reincarnation is possible. If so, I'm coming back as a man!!!

Love to you all.
