Hi it's been a while since I've been on here but I need to ask a question

I've been on HRT - Femoston Conti for a while now, owell over a year I think, and I've noticed an alarming side effect.  A hairy face!!

Yes i know everyone has fine hairs on their skin, but this is way more than that, so bad in fact that I've taken to removing it with hair removing cream every four weeks!!  It grows back so quick that it could be removed every 3 weeks easily!!

Thsi is totally unacceptable as far as I'm concerned and I have an appointment to see the nurse on Monday and I want my HRT changed or I'm coming off it

Anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

I've noticed this a bit but only for the last few months and I've been on HRT so nearly 3 years so didn't think to blame that. I just assumed that it was a natural ageing thing.  Is it mentioned on the leaflet, botoxqueen?

Hi Botoxqueen

I too have a hairy face (thank goodness I'm blonde). But I'm not on HRT.
I have to trim about every 3 weeks with a rechargable 'beauty trimmer'.
I get the odd bristly ones on my chin as well which I remove with tweezers (painful but in a nice way!).
So I'm not sure HRT has anything to do with this - I thought it was more an age thing?

What a depressing thought if this hairiness is par for course of age!  I've checked the pill leaflet and nothing mentioned about this. A long list of possible side effects except this one

I'll see the nurse on Monday and I want a change of hrt

I'll be interested to see what she says but I don't remember anyone mentioning it as an HRT side-effect before.

Ive stopped taking the HRT until I see the nurse on Monday. I will let you know what she says

Good luck with your appointment.  Unfortunately I think many women notice increased facial hairs at menopause and this is naturally not very acceptable.  It must be to do with the changing shift in hormones mustn't it.  A shift in some women towards more testosterone versus otestrogen.  Maybe someone else has a take on this.  A lot a aging females have more hairs on their chins, (distressing).  I do not know what the progestin part of your HRT is.  I once tried an HRT which was a continuous one called Evorel Conti and it completely disagreed with me.  The progestin in it was much related to testosterone I think.  Completely put me off any contiuous combined therapy.  It is quite difficult with some women to get the right HRT but wish you luck with your visit.  I hope you practice nurse is well informed.

I was thinking about this last night (as I cleaned my teeth and examined the soft down on my face in the bathroom mirror and was wondering about the testosterone issue. This is from the menu on the left about progs. in HRT:-
Testosterone derived - Norgestrel, Norethisterone acetate and Levonorgestrel.
Less testosterone related - Medroxyprogesterone acetate(MPA).
Least testosterone related - Dydrogesterone and Micronised progesterone (Utrogestan).
So the one in Femoston should be one of the best in this aspect; the one in Evorel one of the worst.
I'd say that it's more likely to be your own hormones than the HRT, botoxqueen.

Thanks for your input ladies. If it was just a few hairs on the chin or upper lip I could deal with that. What I'm experiencing is hair all over my face and and i include forehead! I really could remove it every 2 weeks - that's how quick it grows!

My eyesight is crap and I use a magnifying mirror to do makeup and see it against the light.
I'm only 47 but went through an early menopause. I've not had a period for over 5 years

Roll on Monday to see the nurse. She is very well up on menopause and HRT thankfully and better than the GP

I've not had HRT, but have noticed increase in fine downy hairs especially down the sides of my face as well as upper lip.

Most annoying to me is hair in my nostrils, besides on eyelids for which waxing does a job better from tweezes... All to do with joys of ageing I am afraid, not HRT.

Best to not use any magnifying mirrors!

God this ageing lark is depressing. I'm blaming HRT for now but it seems it may not be responsible.

Why do we have to get old?

Well I've been to see the nurse and she said that a hairy face is side effect of hormones. She's taken me off HRT for now to see how it goes. I Have tried 3 different ones so i will see if not being on it makes a difference

Unfortunately I'm stuck with my hairy chops cos I'm not on HRT

Hi all

I've not posted on here for a while, but this hairy face issue is still ongoing, so thought I'd update you all

I had my hormones tested again a few weeks ago, and no great surprise, I have been through the menopause and out the other side.  I've not had a period for 7 years at least now

I tried HRT (3 different ones) and didn't get on with it, and came off it last year.  My GP seemed to think that this hairy face thing was down to hormomes and my blood test last year, he felt was too close to me stopping HRT and wanted a re-test several months later.  So thats now been done, and this doc has gone off long term sick.   No one else at the practice seems to be particularly intererested.  A  locum I saw suggested I get laser hair removal, and that was all he could come up with - thanks for nothing..!  I doubt the NHS will fund it....

I'm seeing a female GP tomorrow, who I hope may be more sympathetic.  If not I will ask her for a referral to the menopause clinic, and see where I get

Im only 49, and had a very early menopause, thanks to mum and gran who both had the same.  I'm having to remove the hair every two weeks with cream, and I feel it's noticeable, thankfully no-one has said anything, but I don't know if that means they havent seen it or just are not saying...
