Could have been ivy bees?  Males Flying together towards banks of sand where the females emerge, they then mate and go back into the holes.  Could that be what you saw?

Wasps will use ivy but it's probably a little late for those


Last night it CHUCKED it down  :o needed double wiper speeds for miles and miles  :-\

Today it's been BeaufiFUL

Absolutely wild, pouring rain, extremely windy, only bonus is not as cold as it was last month (although I prefer cold & dry). x
