What a lovely heart-lifting story.  There is a clip on You-Tube of a two-legged greyhound :o charging around like a mad thing :)  It has two legs, both on the same side, no idea how it stands up ::)

Just found this thread...sounds like you all have gotten to enjoy some wonderful animals in your lives!

I've had: cats, dogs, chickens, pigs, horses, goats, geese, ducks, sheep, fish, etc., but my favorite pet of all time was a Highland cow named Rosie.  She was such a sweetheart and loved to play "tag".  She would follow me ANYWHERE, even when she was a bit naughty and got out of the fence.  There was even one time where she found a lovely patch of grass next to a group of construction workers and they tried to approach her.  She thought "woohoo - tag!" and charged and dodged them and scared them back.  As I was walking up the drive, they were telling me how mean she was and that I'd never be able to get her, especially without a lasso and lead.  I smiled and kept walking toward her, said hi to her and told her it was time to go home.  She licked me and stepped right up and followed me home.  Not one word was uttered from all those burly men.....

I LOVE highlanders  ;)  Adam has some on his Farm  :-*

This thread has flown  8)

The 2-legged greyhound might be the one whose Australian Owner ran over ...... the Vet. said there was no hope but due to guilt the dog was nursed back to health  :)

PLEASE HELP!

I am going away on holiday for three weeks soon.  I had already decided that our blind cat would be better off in a cattery than being looked after by someone else but I have just been to visit the cattery and I am horrified!

It is the first time I've seen one of these places and although it is clean and the owner seems friendly and kind enough, the place where he keeps the cats is like a cell block!

The cells are about 4ft wide by 4ft deep and they have a bench, a hiding place (under the bench), a perch and a dangling rope in the centre - and that's it!  She wouldn't even be allowed to come outside as he has kennels nearby.

I was in tears and cannot bear the thought of leaving her there - she will be so unhappy - she's such a wild, free spirit and loves to run around in our garden chasing bees.  I'm afraid this will scar her for life - or at least totally change her personality.

I don't know what to do for the best - should I leave her there just so I know she's safe?

My only other options are to leave her wild in our garden for three weeks and hope the neighbours are good on their promise to feed her every day (she was born wild and lived outside for the first nine months of her life so she's not unhappy outside) or to take her to another neighbour who has loads of outdoor cats (I'm afraid she would be picked on by the other cats and run away).

Has anyone got any sensible advice?  I'd be really grateful for your opinions.   :'(

No do not leave her in the garden.  She may wander and you would never know where she was or another person may find her, take her to a Vet and without a clear owner she may be put to sleep.  It does happen!

Although you are horrified this is usual for kennels.  Remember that there is a turn over of clients and the areas have to be easy to clean.  Cats sleep 95% of the time and I'm sure yours - like mine - will curl up and doze the time away.  Did they have access to litter trays?  Were there water and food bowls available at all times?  Were you able to see other pussies in situ?  Could you go back and have a list of what you would like for your cat?  It is a business and there are Rules for keeping these places clean.  A 'good' kennels will offer special diets and all 'huts' should have extra heating.  Is there access to a Vet. and were there Insurance Certificates on show?

Have a word with your Vet. or local pet shop.  Although the Vets can't recommend they may have a list of approved catteries as will the local Authority.  Where do you live [PM?] .  Maybe a Vet nurse could live in your house whilst you are away in exchange for caring for the cat?  Sometimes visiting Nurses/Vets need short-term accommodation.  Look at Animal Aunts which has been in business for over 25 years, it is costly though!

I live in Greece CLKD - enough said!  Different ball game altogether here I'm afraid!

Mrs P I think there are people here who offer a house visit service (probably foreigners) but I never leave Musa in the house alone - she gets too scared when no-one is around.  She has a special "safe" place where she goes when she's outside.

I did ask my vet and she wasn't aware of any catteries (there are kennels for dogs but putting a cat into a cattery is almost unheard of) - she gave me a leaflet for a kennels!  The one that I'm probably going to use may be the only one in the area and he has only been open for a short while.  He didn't have any feline guests when I went there today but he did say that he was full for the Easter holidays.

I think you're probably right CLKD, in the end at least she would be safe in the cattery.  He said to bring her bed and any favourite toys.  There was a litter box (very small) which he said is changed every day and that they give the cats fresh water every day (there were bowls).  He said that someone comes and gives them food twice a day.  The huts have the sun on them every day (and it's covered and shady at the back).

Thanks for replying both of you.  You've helped me to get over the shock a bit.  Perhaps I over-reacted - I'd never seen one before.  Maybe it won't be that bad.  I'm thinking that perhaps I could ask him to put a smaller box into the hut so she can jump up onto the top bench and the perch more easily (she can get up but has a hard time getting down).

Any other suggestions would be welcome!
