Hi, she told me that many women manage my condition just with moisturisers, although I did tell her, that I was told by the previous gyne, who she has replaced that it was a treatment for life.. to which she replied are they all trying to give you cancer. horror comment I think... ...   I said you know it was very un hygienic when your out trying to use moisturisers, when not at home, public loos,  and to be honest I wouldn even try, I would suffer till I got home. I told her there was no way it would last all day and it doesn't. but im giving it my best shot to prove the point. she gave me sylk which i need to use several times a day so totally unpractical which I mentioned to her.  may try the new one I saw in boots chemist.  as it said long lasting, sylk seem to be a lot better than it used to be. after three weeks with no vagifem, im having slight discomfort. my pot belly seems to have gone down slightly yippee, and i feel more engergetic. and generally brighter.. .  I have not looked at the downunder area to see if its showing signs of shrinkage.   but I do feel sore if I do a lot of walking. I do have a box of vagifem, which I would presume, if I reuse I would have to do the 15 days again every day is that right.. ??

Hellen

I am so sorry to hear about this and absolutely appalled that someone who calls themselves a gynaecologist would say such a thing.

Re the 15 days - depends on how long it is since you stopped it - if just a few days then just up it to 3 x a week or something for a bit maybe, but find someone else to see if you possibly can (different gynae or meno specialist GP).

I still find it outrageous that there is no consistency and such regional variation in what is being said to and prescribed for women. You should not have to feel sore and if the Vagifem was helping and working, of course you shouldn't have to rely on moisturisers!

Can you see seomeone else?

im not practicing this. but thought I would copy and paste it from another site, as I thought it would make a few of you ladies smile..... so here goes ....................  ((((((((  I have experienced this problem since I entered my 60s, and have experimented with various gels.As I do not suffer discomfort, other than during sexual intercourse, I am o.k.as we - my husband and I, do not indulge too frequently any more.I could go to my local well woman centre to get advice, but I dont feel the need to do that.I am not shy about asking advice, but dont feel the need to..Here I go, repeating myself.....think its my age!P.S.A bit of Flora sometimes does the )))))))))trick!!!!!

Here is a good video I found that discusses VA treatment. It is not very long.

http://video.coronapro.co/playvideo.php?c=RYWOkwYH

Please try to watch it as I think it is informative of the options, some of which are new or on the horizon.

The doctor says vagifem doesn't always help the introitus....opening to vagina, which of course many of us here in menopause have experienced. Perhaps trying the estrogen cream to the area will help those of you with this problem who are already on vagifem? If I don't use too much it does seem to help me.

3x weekly vagifem seems not enough for me and any more makes me worse.  I wonder if it makes the discharge too acidic or something and burns the outside tissues including urethra?...maybe this is what causes the blips?  The inside stays fine though and no utis.  ??? Petroleum jelly on the outside could help protect the tissues if no local estrogen cream is used.

Interesting information - but in UK conjugated estrogens are not available for vaginal treatments. I didn't go back to the source but the article only mentioned levels after 7 days use. Research shows that when using vaginal oestrogen for the first time (on atrophic vaginal tissues), serum oestrogen levels (ie in the body) initially increase within the furst few days, but once the tissues are plumped up, absorption then decreases. The priming period ( for plumping up) is usually recommended as 14 days, after which absorption into the body is minimal.

Unfortunately as many of us can attest, lubricants may help vaginal dryness, but dryness is not the same as vaginal atrophy, which can only be helped by local estrogen.  If your VA doesn't hurt you, I think it is probably not VA because VA is PAINFUL!

First use of estrogen on VA tissues made my pain a little worse at first until the tissues improved.  The first vagifem I ever used (10mcg) hurt a lot, but it got better soon.  Taking vagifem 3 x weekly for at least 7 months (after a year or so  of taking it 2x weekly) and before using HRT, my blood level of estradiol was 5 pg/ml which is 18.355 pmol/l !!   :o SOOOO, that took care of my fears that I was getting any significant absorption from long-term vagifem!!!....and guess what...no hot flashes during the day, only night sweats, insomnia and vaginal/urethral issues at that low blood level.

Vagifem 10mcg every other night keeps my VA comfortable but once or twice a week I need to apply gynest cream to the outside vaginal entrance. I agree the vagifem doesn't seem to reach that far. I find the 2 together gives me a level of comfort I can live with.

Hi Ladies,  Does anyone have a problem obtaining Vagifem?  Last few prescriptions I've only been given half a packet - had to wait for the rest.  This morning my pharmacy told me they haven't got any.  Said they are supplied by the manufacturers  on a quota system - l packet a month!  Phamacist got me a packet from another branch, thank God.  How rediculous is that. Using one every other day a packet lasts 6 weeks.  Considering loads of women use this and its for life what are they thinking of.  Starting to panic in case I get to a situation of running out sometime.
Ok, had my rant.  Wishing everyone a happy and COMFORTABLE Christmas xxx

Hi nervousnel - that is terrible - especially as some women have to increase their dosage to more than twice a week to stay comfortable. I can't quite see why the manufacturers need to ration them?? Sounds bizarre unless there is a blip in production. I live in SW and no problems at all. You probably need to order well in advance? Hope you aren't having to pay for a full prescription when you only get half a packet?
