Rainbow Bridge
« on: March 14, 2011, 09:10:51 AM »

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I often wonder what will happen when all of my cats (some of which hated each other) come running to meet me over Rainbow Bridge - I can see an almighty cat fight ensuing  ;D

If it should be I grow frail and weak
and pain prevents my peaceful sleep.
Then you must do what must be done
when this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Selfishness might stay your hand
But on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.

We've had so many happy years
That what's to come can hold no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer, so,
When the time comes to let me go
Take me where my needs they'll tend.

Only - stay with me until the end
Hold me firm and speak to me
until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time, you too will see
It is a kindness that you do for me,
Although my tail Its' last has waved,
From pain & suffering I've been saved.

Do not grieve
It should be you
who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close we two these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

when my 2 boys passed away within 3 months of each other in 2009, I found this very comforting.
It's by Irving Townsend

“We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even
more temporary than our own, live within a fragile
circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its
awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish
memory as the only certain immortality,
never fully understanding the necessary plan.”

I had 2 cats which went to RB 6 weeks apart, the same Vet. came to the house.  I knew each time [4 in 22 months] that I was doing the 'right' thing .........

I found Rainbow Bridge a great comfort when my Dad died - I knew he would be re-united with his beloved border collie, Deefa, who went to the Bridge 10 years before him.

Oh how sweet.  I can't think that we are on this Earth without somewhere waiting …….. our Vicar used to have an annual pets' blessing service - until a hamster was got by a cat not in a basket  :o - the same Vicar did his rounds on a large chestnut horse ………

We've had another dog and 3 cats that have also gone to rainbow bridge over the years but
I didn't know about the poem then.

OK now adding up [not that this is a competition] - 2 cats that were run over 9 days apart; a JR that lived until she was 14-ish.  A working lab..  5 rabbits, 3 cats and a dog in recent years …….. it is hard work  :-\ so I've called a halt now.  There were also the 3 dogs that I babysat whilst owners were at work ……….
