HRT or not
« on: January 14, 2026, 04:59:04 PM »

Hi,

I am 51 years old. I went though premature menopause in 2008 and was on HRT until 2024 when I decided to take a break and see how I was after being on HRT for so long! My hot flashes started up again but they have now ceased but I have gone up almost 3 dress sizes since 2024 and am wondering whether I should go back on HRT to see if this alleviates my huge, swollen tummy. The doctors are useless and say 'well if you want to go back on it, then do'. Great! Thanks!

I am so fed up of feeling rubbish and uncomfortable.

Any suggestions welcome. I was on Evorel Conti patches.

Hormone therapy is a personal choice but in your position I would absolutely restart it and also make sure you are aware of the full range of options available.

However there are a couple of things that I would definitely urge you to do if you haven't already, irrespective of your decision on hormone therapy.

Firstly the bloating and abdominal distension requires investigation with a pelvic ultrasound and a CA-125 blood test.

Secondly you ought to get a DEXA, having experienced POI in your early 30's and been treated with an absolutely pitiful doses of estrogen for such a young woman, assuming you were on 50mcg patches all along, and no testosterone.

Thank you. I was on estrogen and testosterone HRT. Patches were my last type of HRT. Usually tablets but had various reactions.
