Estriol 1mg cream/ovestin now burning like crazy !!
« on: January 12, 2026, 11:26:32 AM »

Hi everyone,

After 3 weeks of new treatments, interosa vaginal pessery and vaginal utrogestan plus lenzetto spray I had a really sore vagina/vulva flare up so stopped it all. ( previous using estriol inside vagina and out quite sucessfully )

Have tried to restart the estriol cream but every time my vagina is on fire  >:(

Similar thing happened and I had thrush once before.

I guess it could be a VA flare up but im sure it shouldnt burn like fire.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like you are one of many that react badly to oestrogen in its various forms. My only suggestion is to search the forum for others in the same situation and hopefully you will find answers. A miserable situation for sure!

I'd be inclined to treat for thrush anyway, you can buy oral Fluconazole cheaply online. Might be best to avoid pessaries in case it makes things worse. If it's outside rather than in also worth checking it isn't getting in contact with anything you may be allergic to.

yes will treat orally for thrush.

Its the vagina burning. Typical VA flare up I guess.  My anxiety goes crazy but its what everyones describing and whats happened to me before !

Will try vagirux later and keep with the estriol cream on the vulva.

fingers crossed XX

I remember when vaginal utrogrestan didn't agree with me. I kept trying and it was getting worse. I think in the end I had to "rinse" out any residue with Yes moisturiser. Then give it a few days before the Ovestin became more comfortable.

For a while on the utrogestan I thought it was the dryness flaring and not the utro. Then one day the capsule fell out and still had medication in it. So I squeezed it out and tried to pop it back in. It burnt like mad and that's when I put 2 and 2 together and used the Yes to try and get it out! That's not a suggestion by the way, just what I tried as I just wanted the burning to end.

Hopefully once things have settled down, the Ovestin/Estriol cream will work well again for you.

If you're wanting to test for thrush before treating, Canesten have a test pack you can buy over the counter.

Thanks all, even yes moisturiser causes irritation on top of irritation at the moment.

Just going to leave it to calm for a few days and then see the GP.

I was prescribed estriol cream for some issues after I had a baby (so not menopause/VA related).

I also found it caused a burning feeling - both internally and externally.

I ended up with a specialist vulval dermatologist who said that it can cause a burning pain in some women and it's best to discontinue.

Would it be possible to ask for a referral to a specialist vulval dermatologist? The one I saw was on the NHS. It was a long wait, but absolutely worth it. She knew things GPs and gynaecologists had no idea about.

This is interesting as I have known of women who have attended the GUM clinics and have had the best outcomes when they had lost faith with GP's and Gynaecologists who had no idea how to treat symptoms. Gum clinics probably have some of the best specialists when it comes to sexual health.
