Vaginal Atrophy/Thrush
« on: January 06, 2026, 09:06:56 PM »

Just wondering if anyone has been treated with topical estrogen when it’s actually thrush that’s been causing symptoms?  I have been using topical estrogen daily since September.  Began with Estriol internally and externally, then November began Vagirux pessaries and use the Estriol cream on the outside.  Whilst there has been some improvement I’m still burning every day around the vaginal opening and urethra. It also looks really red around the vaginal opening. As I was on Systemic HRT the doctor gave me a diagnosis of VA and didn’t test for thrush or BV.  I’ve never felt dry down there, just burning and itching around the vulva and toward the back end. Should I ask my doctor to get tested for thrush?  Or could I just treat it myself whilst still using the estrogen creams and see if it helps?

Hello
I dont know if this helps but i was having problems with bladder urgency and my gp advised me to use oestrogen cream. After a week using it every day i started to feel uncomfortable with itching and burning inside and outside, but worse outside.  So i stopped using the cream and used Canesten instead outside.  It worked for me .  Now I manage my bladder with oestrogen cream a couple of times a week and if I get sore and itchy I use Canesten for a couple of days and the itching stops.  Hope you find a solution that works for you.

Might be worth going back to the GP. Another thought is an allergic reaction to washing powder, soap, shampoo etc. For me extreme sensitivity of the urethra was Va. Does it better or worse if you apply estriol cream more often?

The only way to know if it's thrush is to go to the doctor or maybe the practice nurse and have a swab test done.
If it's not thrush perhaps try just using the cream alone as the Vagirux could be irritating, some have had problems with this including myself.

Hi - been there!  I had to stop using Ovestin on the outside because it gave me thrush!  It was Candida Glabrata, therefore not as easy to get rid of.
I find the Vagifem inside doesn't cause the problem, just the Ovestin.
I definitely recommend going back to the doc for a swab because what you are describing sounds identical to what I had.
