Biopsy results tomorrow
« on: February 05, 2025, 07:30:32 AM »

Hello everyone, I'm writing this, I think as a way to just get it out and hope someone can calm me down.  I had a breast biopsy 3 weeks ago and tomorrow I get my results.  I was told I had micro calcifications that were 'indeterminate'.  I have them in my left breast.  You can't feel them so this all came as a huge shock.  I'm a nervous wreck at the thought of seeing the doctor again.  He's a bit clinical and doesn't have a great bedside manner!

Hello Miss Sunshine

I just wanted to wish you luck for tomorrow, I expect it will be a relief to get it over with.

Hopefully ladies who have had similar experiences will be along to reassure you, in the meantime hang in there and please let us know how you get on.

Wishing you well and sending hugs.

Just wanted to wish you luck for tomorrow and second everything the other ladies have said. A lot of these doctors are very blunt and clinical like you say. Think some of them have no bedside manner these days. Fingers crossed for a positive result x

So not the news I hoped for but the good news is it's a precancer.  So an operation and short block of radiotherapy.  The doctor is very positive that all will be well.  Just feeling a bit numb right now.

Listen to the Consultant.  I had 4 weeks of radiation - prior to it I went to the Dept so that it could be explained and the area was given a tatoo.  This enabled the X-rays to target the exact area every time.  I was offered a blue paint on the area but wouldn't have been able to get into the bath/shower.

By the end of 4 weeks the area of treatment was red so I was given a steroid cream to apply - it looked like that breast had been in the sunshine for too long  ::).  I had to stay away from elderly and young children and although several thought that I might, I did not 'glow in the dark'!

What advice have U been given, some Consultants will offer the support of a breast care nurse.  MayB make a list of your worries to discuss with someone in the radiation dept.?  Hopefully U won't have to wait too long B4 you get your first treatment.  It was a hot Summer so I was advised to avoid sitting in the sunshine and to wear a hat when out and about!

Thank you.  Yes I spoke to a cancer nurse.  They have all been very supportive and positive towards me.  They will place a marker in the breast pre surgery to guide them to.the area and then remove it after surgery.
I am feeling sad but hopeful.

I am sorry you had to hear that news but glad that it has been caught at this point.

As a mastectomised member of a BRCA2 family I just wanted to add that if you want a more definitive surgery for peace of mind and future risk reduction rather than just removing that little area, you can request a mastectomy.

I hope this doesn't upset you and it may not be something you want, but many women are not made aware of the option who would actually much prefer this for their mental wellbeing.

This can often avoid radiation for those with pre- or early cancers.

U need to grieve, this is taking time out of your daily activities as well as being on your mind!  What's the operation - I had lumpectomy under GA, the biopsy showed changes in the tissues hence the precautionary radiation treatment.

My surgeon did tell me : "Your type of cancer does not require mastectomy, if U continue to be worried in future we can reconsider".  After 12 months he asked whether I had thought about it.  He was so positive that it wasn't necessary in 'my type' that I hadn't given it any more thought.  It may be something to discuss if U feel it appropriate for you.

Have U been given the nurses number for 24/7 contact with worries?  I was tired during the treatment every day at noon to co-incide with going into the Office to work, but that was more due to the very hot summer.  I would drive home, go up to bed with 2 cats and the dog cuddled up.  If I was late the Siamese would stand half way up the stairs as if to tell me it was time for bed  ::)

Any idea when U are likely to get the surgery?  I then had to wait for a month to allow the area to heal B4 radiation treatment .  Get plenty of food into the freezer as well as nighties that do up down the front; not over the head as you may be stiff and sore, also it's quicker when Doctors do their Rounds ;-).

Thank you..It will be a lumpectomy as a day surgery and if all goes to plan, home the same day.  Radiotherapy will follow at some point.  I have phone numbers and lots of support from the cancer nurse.  I came home with lots of literature!  Too much to deal with now though.

The doctor did mention that this was a consideration if I didn't want radiotherapy.  He did say it was radical however and not what he would suggest.  It's something to consider though.

Keep a list of questions to ask.  Mastectomy is longer surgery than lumpectomy, I'm never happy with Day Case for these types of operations.  1 needs to recover with support and pain relieve.

As an aside: when I had my 3 surgeries I went to theatre at 9.00 a.m. back by 10.30 and slept until 3.30 p.m.  ;D. Then I felt the anaesthetic leave my body, I woke up and asked for tea and toast  ::).  DH sat by the bed watching golf on mute  :-*

Particularly with the lesion on the left side I would definitely recommend taking the time to become well informed about the potential implications of radiation close to the heart and lungs.

I know you are dealing with a lot but the more information you have, the more power you have, and you can only make the best choice for you if you know about all the options.
