Thick womb lining worries
« on: November 28, 2024, 07:49:45 PM »

I’m 65 and was given a result of 8 mm for my womb lining after having a pelvic scan.  My menopause specialist says I will have to be urgently referred to a gynaecologist as it’s over 7 mm.  I’m getting really worried now that I may have cancer although the radiologist said my ovaries looked ok.  I’ve had to stop taking HRT too so still struggling with poor sleep, headaches, anxiety etc.  what a state to be in! Has anyone else been through something similar?

Lots.  What did the specialist suggest that you should see a gynae for?  I think they like it around 5mmg so it may be that you are going to have a conversation about a D&C type procedure.  Make a list of your worries and ask the questions B4 U decide on any treatment.  U don't have to agree to anything immediately.

How long have you been on HRT and which regime?

Hi

I had investigations last year as my womb lining was 11mm. I was told by the consultant that I had a naturally thick womb lining as it had been the same for ten years. Biopsy was normal.

Thank you Nik for telling me about your thickened lining being described as ok - did the gynae say that after you’d had a biopsy?  I think mine has thickened due to the mirena coil mainly as it was only 5 mm in March when it was inserted and the biopsy I had a year ago was ok - I’ve been worried because my specialist said I need to have an urgent scan as the last scan I had in May showed the lining was 15 mm 😣

I was previously on a low progesterone regime, relative to oestrogen. My ultrasound scan came back as 11.7. The hysteroscopy revealed several polyps which were removed and biopsied but found to be benign.

I had a Mirena fitted afterwards to prevent it thickening again. I stayed on my HRT whilst waiting for the procedure, which was done within the two weeks on the 'cancer pathway'. Are you on a high oestrogen regime? Are you having any bleeding?

What action did they take when the lining was 15mm in May or is that the scan you've just had, which has come back at 8mm?  I was told polyps can make the lining seem thicker on the scan, than it is in reality.

Hi Recreate23,

Yes I've had this, twice. Both times were because my progesterone wasnt' high enough or I wasn't absorbing it well enough when I used it vaginally, so on both occasions I had very heavy bleeding and was referred both times under the 2 week pathway. Both times my womb lining were about 11mm.

Second time I had a hysteroscopy and biopsies which came back fine.

I was also worried as I have a very small cyst on my left ovary but that was fine as well.

I understand your worry but the NHS in things like this, I've found are very thorough.

Let us know how you get on xx

Thank you all for your replies🙂

When I had the hysteroscopy in March, and the mirena coil was inserted, no polyps were found and my lining was only 5 mm.  When it was scanned in May, it was 15 ml but the gynaecologist said this can’t be right because it was only 5 mm 2 months before so he did nothing about it.  I was booked in for a hysteroscopy with him but it didn’t go ahead because of the pelvic pains caused by the mirena and causing me much distress.

The palpitations started after having the coil inserted disrupting my sleep and now that I’ve come off the HRT as advised, they’re still a problem.  So I’m looking at having a consultation with a medical herbalist on Tuesday - I really don’t want to continue on HRT as I think I must be allergic to progesterone but beginning to feel really weak with the decreasing oestrogen.  Has anyone tried a herbalist?

Hello Recreate23

Am I right in thinking that you were booked in for a hysteroscopy in May but you couldn't attend? Perhaps contact your GP as another scan may be suggested as a follow up.

You may get a better response to your herbalists question if you re post on
the Alternatives section of the forum.

Wishing you well and take care.

Hi had exactly the same and referred to gynaecology. I had a polyp, benign and removed by hysteroscopy, gives a clearer picture of what is happening in the womb.  Gynaecologist told me to come off HRT. I have struggled since I was 50, now 59 on and off HRT. Sleepless nights, anxiety. I have found that even when tired going to the gym helps, pilates, yoga etc. It's good to talk and we are not alone. I seriously thought I was going off my head. I am cold turkey no HRT so take magnesium glycerinate, Vitamin D and a Well Woman Vitamin. Soya, collagen anything that has been recommended. When I came off HRT I had trembling and found this can be common on Balance Me site. I hope you get resolved and you are not alone.

Recreate23, are you saying you have a womb lining measurement of 8mm and you have a Mirena coil?

What dose of oestrogen have you been taking and do you have bleeds?

Actually my womb lining was measured as 8.5 cm.  I had to urgently have my mirena coil removed in June as it was causing much pain during the night and I was therefore sleep deprived also 😣.

I am now waiting to see the gynaecologist as I’ve finally been put on the rapid pathway - hope they’ll contact me before Xmas!

I had a scan today and been referred as womb lining thickened polyps and a small cyst on right ovary. Very little bleeding just spotting in October. Bit anxious but I’m hoping it’s all ok from what I’ve read above xxx

I too have a thickened lining (11mm) with a polyp. I’ve had a biopsy but also been told I need to have a hystreroscopy, where they’ll remove the polyp at the same time. I’m on low dose Lenzetto (one spray) and Utrogestan. Having read things on here I’m wondering if I need to come off HRT completely. It’s a minefield!

I have my results from the scan which says lining is uneven and 10mm they suspect a polyp. A small simple cyst on right ovary. GP referring me 2 week pathway. Here we go again! So stressful and worrying. Hopefully it’ll be ok. Sending lots of hugs xx

Thank you everyone for your responses- just an update to say the hysteroscopy and biopsy results were negative thankfully 😅 apart from feeling tired, I feel pretty much back to normal ie pre HRT - I’ve seen a medical herbalist who prescribed valerian tablets - they seem to be helping me to sleep better although they give me a bit of stomach pain - hopefully it will go after a couple of weeks - at least I don’t feel nauseous also as I did when taking antidepressants.  Hope you are all feeling better 🤞
