Can illness stop absorption of Utrogestan
« on: November 15, 2024, 09:43:03 PM »

I am on 75 patch and 100 Utrogestan. After years of trial and error this is a good combination for me except for random bleeding.
I haven’t bled for about 3 months then I had a tummy bug and have started a bleed.

Is it possible that this could be caused by Utrogestan getting through my system too quick? I’m also wondering if my random bleeding is to do with this? I take magnesium as I get constipation if I don’t.

I have a telephone consultation in 3 weeks but just asking all you knowledgeable folk while I wait for my appointment!

Sorry that you've had The Bug.  MayB speak to a Pharmacist about this: is there anything in the leaflet in the box of HRT?

Hello Christine49

I wonder if you take the Utrogestan all the time or only for some days of the month?
Using it for part of the month allows for a bleed but taking it continually should prevent this from happening by keeping the womb lining thin all the time.

I am post menopausal and take Utrogestan every day along with one sachet of gel,  I am not familiar other regimes  but I am sure that other ladies will be along to advise you.

Take care.

K.

Hi Christine49,

I am post meno and was on Utrogstan and gel.  I never did absorb the Utrogestan very well but after a bad stomach bug I had a very heavy bleed.  At my scan and biopsy (which were both fine) the consultant said it was quite likely that the stomach bug caused me to absorb even less of the Utrogestan, hence the bleed.  As I don't absorb Utrogestan well anyway, I decided to have a Mirena fitted which, for me, has proved to be great.

Absolutely this can happen.

This is the same as birth control pills which can be rendered ineffective if there's significant vomiting or diarrhea.

If I were you I would take it vaginally until your digestive upset resolves.

If this is a once off in the context of a diarrhoeal illness, I would perhaps think twice about reporting it to your GP as this can sometimes lead to over zealous referral for invasive investigations and in some cases pressure to discontinue HRT.

Obviously this is not the case if there was persistent or unexplained bleeding, however what you have described is neither.

Are you peri or meno? If peri it's likely you'll bleed anyway even if you take utro continually. If you're meno I'd be inclined to tell your gp and get it checked out in case the lining has thickened. Agree with the above - if you have any sort of digestive problems using it vaginally would be better.
