Strange lower back and hip pain
« on: November 15, 2024, 08:45:49 PM »

Evening
Just wondering if anyone had any experience of sudden onset lower back pain with no prior injury or history?
Mine started in July suddenly whilst on holiday -gradual onset
Deep ache in my lumbar area and tailbone
The tailbone pain is awful like toothache and so intense
The pain radiates to my hips
Varies in intensity and some days it disappears  only to return worse than ever
Exercise has no impact on it
Pain meds really don't help
It wakes me in the night
Amytriptiline has helped me sleep sometimes
I also think it radiates into my pelvis but sometimes I can't actually where the pain is.
I did wonder about pelvic floor issue as I am very 'gassy' and not much control of the gas ( too much information perhaps!)
Bowel bloods were negative
Seen GP after the usual carry on to get passed the front desk
He  was was really unconcerned- had a rake of bloods all deemed to be normal
Had two pelvic x rays
The first unclear 'due to gas' awaiting results of second
Seen physiotherapist who thought possible facet joint issue.
Just been doing my exercises and getting thoroughly fed up.
I'm 56 post meno no HRT slim build always been fit and healthy and its really set me back .
I wonder if next steps should be an oesteopath ?
I can walk for miles - the pain isn't made worse (or better) by walking
Sitting makes it worse and driving -guess what I do in my job ? Yes work between an office and drive a lot .
Yoga helps a little bit cat curl position etc
Sorry for the moans just fed up and a bit worried and wonder if anyone experience of similar ?

Have U a similar thread  :-\  ??? .........

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  A physiotherapist interested in womens' health should be aware of this and advise appropriate exercise; how to lift, bend - as well as swimming, gentle walking to keep us as supple as possible.

What R your periods up to?  Have U tried pain relief B4 exercise/walking?

There are special cushions to ease the coccyx area as well as work benches that one can stand at.

Yoga at this point may be too much 'wrong' exercise.  MayB ask your GP for a referral to a dedicated menopause Clinic?

Putmans do specialist cushions & chairs.

Acupuncture may be another avenue to explore. You’d need to find the right type of acupuncturist a pain clinic may be able to put you in touch with a suitable one.

Or ask GP for referral to a pain clinic if things so far haven’t worked.

Yes I have had this since crashing into meno along with a load of other issues. I used to feel like my lumbar spine was going to fall apart- and it was v painful at night. Mainly anxiety I think, just focus on exercise and strengthening - Pilates much better than yoga for it. If you are walking and ok I’d say it’s nothing serious - you would know about it if it was. Sometimes there are just no answers to these weird things we have. If you are ok mentally and can get on with life I wouldn’t worry too much about it xx

Is it what's known as tailbone or coccyx pain? I had this with one of my pregnancies and it is very painful. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/tailbone-coccyx-pain/.  I had a slight flare up two years ago but a visit to a physio (private) soon helped alleviate it. Pelvic floor exercises were particularly important. Did your physio mention this?

Oh my god, I've just started with painin this area 2 nights ago.

I started with lower back pain and hip pain in bed. Woke the next morning and just had back pain, knee pain gone.

Last night had about 4 hours total sleep due to it hurting and couldn't get comfy.

Today I've had lower back pain, hip pain, groin pain, knee pain, and for a while thigh pain.

Thanks for all the replies hints and tips .
Had more physio sessions she thinks perhaps facet joint issue - but nothing concrete as yet .
It tends to come and go -had a horrible couple of days with it last week like a nagging toothache in my tailbone and an occasional pain in  the front of my pelvis.
The last few days have been much easier -however I know it will return -it has had this remitting pattern since September
Think I am going to book an osteopath in the new year .
