Insomnia - any helpful medications?
« on: April 19, 2024, 05:56:54 PM »

Hi all

Can anyone recommend any tablets for insomnia please?
Struggling to get good nights sleep as I'm still fluctuating (coming down off a high dose oestrogen) xxxx

Magnesium glycinate is my night time saviour. It helps with relaxation of the mind and body as well as aiding sleep x

I've found this helps (other suppliers are available - this was just the first link on googling it now :))

Sorry to hear you are coming down off high dose oestr - I had similar, and terrible fluctuations exacerbated by that high dose.
I know many people especially on this forum hate utrogestan, but for me it's helped with sleep too.

I use the Life Extension version of this GABA and can confirm it is brilliant, really calming. It totally takes the edge off my progrsterone withdrawal at the end of the 12 days I'm on it.
I'd also recommend a valerian supplement called Valdrian, that has got me to sleep on many a bad night.
Plus the mag glycinate taken at bedtime.

Valerian - even in weak tea - gave me craziest nightmares (apparently dreaming a known effect)!

Magnesium is a funny one - people are adamant about different formulations.  I was told threonate, whereas others here told other things.

Threonate is also good, it's often used for cognitive benefits and anxiety. I think most forms are good, I'm in a magnesium group where they have a great infographic showing the different uses. The only one I now avoid is citrate as its known for having a mild laxative effect.
Can't say I've had crazy dreams on valerian, actually the worst I've had is when taking utrogestan, now they are really fantastical and disturbing, although occasionally really interesting too.

I combine Lara Briden and Huberman Lab's sleep recommendations:

400mg magnesium (either glycinate or l-threonate)
3000mg taurine
5mg melatonin
100mg apigenin

All that one hour before bed. I do then take my utrogestan at bed, although it's only 1 hour later.

Does it help?? I think if you have no underlying causes for sleep problems these supplements probably help. If you have reasons for sleep crap (like my severe night time symptoms) then all the sleep meds in the world don't help. Not even trazodone helps if I'm having a bad night.
