Starting Vagirux
« on: March 25, 2024, 03:55:04 PM »

Hello all,

I've been on oral meds for 30 years following a surgical menopause. Recently my GP decided to take me off HRT tablets and onto Evorel patches. It was such a low starting dose though, that even though it's been increased to 75mcg I now have VA symptoms which are constant and stopping me from sleeping or working properly. (I sit down for work). GP says I could go up to 100mcg. I was prescribed Vagirux which I haven't used as the whole area is so painful at the moment. After good advice on here, I asked for Ovestin for external areas but it irritates. Perhaps it's doing its job? I know I need to start internal treatment or it'll never improve but I'm anxious after reading about reactions to Vagirux. My question is: how to apply the product without too much pain or damage, especially as I can't apply it using vaginal moisturisers.

For info, I've always had extremely sensitive skin, whether it's skincare or cosmetics - I only use E35 moisturisers but don't think I can use it on vulva.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi.  Why did your GP alter your regime if it was working ?  Did U have any VA symptoms ?

The thing I think is if the vagina/vulva are sore/stingy to apply gently, initially on the outer areas.  As the areas moisten up, go internally a little more very other night.  Until it's less sore.

There are treatments for the vulva including 'ovestin', some use 'vagifem' internally and 'ovestin' on the outer skin.  'vagirux' may not be suitable for you, it's a bit Trial and Error.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi CLKD,

The GP stopped my Elleste Solo after the T1 diabetes team said I shouldn't be on them now as I'm 62. I never had any problems with Elleste but he prescribed patches and so it's all I have now and I'm a little down about it all. When I asked if I could return to tablet-form HRT he refused as he doesn't want to be responsible for me having a stroke etc.

I did try external Ovestin but it irritates and doesn't go away until I wash it off with E45. I'll try your suggestion of trying a little Vagirux on the outer areas and then go higher without the applicator.

Thank you.

"T1 diabetes team". - in the surgery or at Consultant level?

Why would tablet cause a stroke, on what is the GP judging that advice on?

It's such a mine field sometimes.

Consultants at specialist centre. There's a family history of heart attack too. T1 diabetics have x5 risk of stroke/heart attacks than non-diabetics. HRT after the age of 55 is 'not recommended' according to NICE, so I think, with the best will in the world, the tablet ship has sailed.

Hi hystergirl, I wouldn't worry too much re the vagirux but DO specifically ask for vagifem, vagirux is supposed to be the same but half the price, hence why Drs prescribe it more, more women seem to have issues with it but not the vagifem

Hi Jaypo and thanks for that reassurance. I'll definitely ask for Vagifem.
