Coming off Depo Provera at 50
« on: December 01, 2023, 12:14:15 PM »

I’ve been on Depo Provera for 12 years. I had my last injection yesterday as I’m about to turn 50 this month. I have no idea if I’m premenopausal as I’ve had no symptoms and the Depo stopped my periods 12 years ago. I just wondered if anybody else stopped using Depo at 50, and what happened with their periods. My nurse suggested other options such as the coil, tablets and patches, but I don’t want to use any of these unless I have to, as I only used Depo to stop my periods as they were really painful, and not as contraception. I’ve searched online and have read that after stopping Depo your periods can take up to a year to return, but there’s nothing online about stopping at 50 years old. I just want to be prepared. Thank you in advance.

I would be prepared for a bleed. The average age of meno is 51 so you might be OK or you might not. Do you know how old your mother was? That can give you an indication.

A lot of women find themselves wondering what to expect after stopping Depo at this stage in life. Since Depo can mask menopausal symptoms for years, it's hard to know exactly where your body stands until the hormone clears out of your system, which can take months or even longer. For some, periods return gradually, while others go straight into menopause without much activity.

One thing worth mentioning, especially after long-term use, is that some women have experienced health issues related to extended Depo-Provera use, like bone density loss or hormonal imbalances. There have even been legal cases connected to these effects. If you're curious what that landscape looks like, here’s a quick overview of Depo-Provera settlement amounts.

Thank you for your reply. I had forgotten all about this post.
As an update, I had my last Depo shot in December 2024 and had no issues. May 25 I had a bit of spotting, and again in January this year. I still get hot flushes and my sleep pattern has no pattern, but I’m happy to say everything else is ok.
Hopefully my story will help other people not be so worried about stopping Depo. The internet is great at publishing horror stories.
