How to tell
« on: October 20, 2023, 02:17:53 AM »

Am I correct in thinking that if you are on HRT and you have been for a few years  ….that the only way to know if you are peri or post menopausal is to come off it and see what happens ???
Thank you x

Yes, I've been told repeatedly that the only way to know is to stop taking all hormones and see what happens.

I’m not on hrt anymore . Had a total hysterectomy due to womb cancer . Bleeding  more or less all last year . Presented a lot at GPs . Am now questioning why it took 8 months for referral to be actioned . Hospital are saying that I wasn’t put on two week pathway due to me being perimenopausal !!! I’m 59 and was on hrt for years ! So I don’t know how the hell they came to that conclusion !  Had I been classed as menopausal I would have been seen within 2 weeks !

At 59 most are menopausal though not all. Given your age and change in bleeding imo even if they couldn't use the 2 week pathway it shouldn't have taken anywhere near 8 months.

That's awful. I hadn't realised you wouldn't get 2 week pathway if not post menopausal. As you rightly point out, how would you know unless you stopped hrt. Are you thinking of complaining?

If you were diagnosed as post menopausal then that means you definitely should have been put on the two week pathway. Someone badly messed up with your care. I'm so sorry Rosie

I was put on the two week pathway twice in 15mths and I’m 56 . I too have had womb cancer and was on low dose hrt. The first time I had light bleeding my womb lining was just over the limit so had a biopsy and it came back normal. This time I was bleeding again at Xmas lost a lot of weight and my cuti drs felt something else was going on. I hadn’t mentioned I was bleeding again until I saw my Gp who sent me to rapid diagnostic team who sent me straight on the 2 week pathway. I was operated on 6 weeks after having the biopsy. All very quick hope you are ok.

Agree with Sheila. Eight months is an inordinate length of time to have to wait for any kind of treatment.
The bleeding should have been a give away, coupled with your age.
I would look at complaining to PALS about this.

How are you managing without HRT now? x

If I understand correctly you do not have a womb and as you have had a total hysterectomy this means you no longer have a cervix either?

I think the two week pathway is designed to identify potential womb cancer - but in your case you don't have a womb. However ANY such bleeding from the vagina is not normal and should be seen urgently.

If you say you have been bleeding for a year since your operation, then surely this should have been investigated as part of the post-op follow-up? I'm not clear about protocols here but I would most certainly want to know why I was still bleeding if I no longer had a uterus or cervix, and especially since your operation was due to womb cancer.

Do ask for an urgent referral.

Hi Hurdity. I think Rosie is referring to the fact she was bleeding for over a year before finally being found to have womb cancer and given a hysterectomy. She is querying why her cancer wasn't picked up earlier
