Prolapse - any advice/help please 😢
« on: September 29, 2023, 03:51:58 PM »

Hello,

This is my first post & I really hope someone can offer any advice or just a comforting word.
I was diagnosed with a uterine prolapse last week. This was following two previous doctors visits - the first I said I was concerned about frequently needing a wee & feeling wet  😳 down below. I was prescribed vaginal hrt (I’m in the menopause too) I didn’t use them as felt after reading up on them, that they didn’t match my symptoms.
I went back to the doctor as soon as I felt this lump from down below, and was told it was a cyst, although again, I felt it would be a prolapse.
This was confirmed last week, I was told I’d be refered but there’s a long wait.
I mentioned I had lots of white discharge - this was normal for me, according to my doctor, but I know it isn’t ! I had a yellow discharge on a liner too.
Since then, after intercourse, I had loads of runny white discharge (tmi but I’m at my wits end) and my partner felt sore too - this can’t be right. I’ve got abdominal pains too. I’m in a relatively new relationship and this is just such a worry for me.
I have so many questions and physically & mentally I feel lousy. I feel as if I’ve just been told I’ve got this and just got to wait. I’ve called the doctor again today and have a routine appointment in a few weeks.
Please can anyone offer any advice or what to do next, this is so stressful 😢 thank you.

Peri-menopause can throw up a lot of questions and odd symptoms  ::)

:welcomemm:  who have you seen and who examined you?  Several ladies have had treatment for prolapse.  How long is the waiting list to be seen in a Hospital, U could ring the appropriate dept to find out.  It may be better to see a Nurse Practitioner - take a list of queries with you, it mayB that an appt is available sooner than the GP appt. If U don't ask etc..

Vaginal discharge is normal unless it's continually green or yellow or smelly.  Also, if you are having unprotected sex  :safe: you can expect some discharge: what goes up etc. ;-).

Use plenty of lubricant, i.e. KY jelly, B4 intercourse which will ease any soreness for both of you.  As we age our natural lubrication may dry a little.  Hence the suggestion of vaginal atrophy treatment.

Thank you for replying CLKD.
I’ve seen a GP so far each time. She just said it was a long wait to be seen at gynaecology.
I feel very self conscious that I smell & am abit scared to use anything lubricant wise as I’m already so wet 😳
I wish I’d asked more last time I was at the doctors but I think I went into a kind of sad shock… it’s only now I’m reading lots and googling things (not always a good idea) that I wish I’d asked more.

I began a thread years ago, Ohhh Errrr - because my body smelt different but DH couldn't smell me  ::).  Even now, some days I'm aware of an odour by the end of the day.

R U able to take a cancellation appt if some1 doesn't turn up, if so ring the Dept and let them know.

As oestrogen levels drop the body may become lax = aches and pains, which may include the womb/prolapse.  Also the body may become dry, inside and out  ::)

I think the odour is from the prolapse though rather than hormonal 😢
I’ve read it can be the bodies way of cleaning/protecting itself !?

For the prolapse, what about seeing a physio who specialises in womens health privately, or try acupuncture?

For the yellow discharge. This could be normal or it could be for example an infection or sti - do you think it could be a possibility?  There will be other reasons but I don't know what there are.

Unsure why your partner would be sore though, could it be you're too dry inside, or does he have a cut or tear?

Do you get your abdominal pains 'only' after intercourse?

Did your doctor take swabs to rule out infection?
White discharge is normal unless clumpy, then it could be thrush.
Vaginal atrophy causes watery discharge.
If your doctor wont do the swabs or you can't get in for weeks then go to the nearest GUM clinic, they are brilliant at sorting these things out and will also confirm prolapse or cyst, there is a big difference.
If you have a prolapse you will need local estrogens plus physiotherapy. I had a prolapse years ago and this sorted mine out. Not a quick fix but the sooner you start treatment the better. But first get checked out to rule out infection.

Hi Dierdre

Which local estrogen did you use for the prolapse?

How many times did you use it per week, and how long before it started improving the prolapse?

I use vagifem or vagirux pessary and ovestin externally every night. I also had a few sessions with a physiotherapist who shows how to do pelvic floor exercise correctly and which muscles to target. It's a gradual process over a few months but preferable to surgery.  I also tried a silicon pessary (like a doughnut) to hold the prolapse up but didn't get on with it, although a lot have success with these.
Once the estrogen strengthened the pelvic floor the exercises became easier and I started to notice the prolapse wasn't protruding as often. Try not to lift heavy things.

Just read this thread and little to add that has not already been said.

Do you reckon though Dierdre that Uterine Prolapse which the original OP has can be heloed in this way as much as side wall prolapse can be helped ? my prolapse is anterior.

Taz2 may know if she comes along.

Mine was anterior (cystocele) bladder prolapse stage 1. Uterine prolapses can also be reversed or stopped from getting worse with estrogen, physio and exercises but it depends what stage the prolapse is. Stage 3 and over I think would definately be eligible for surgery or alternatively a ring pessary.

Taz will be able to give good advice on this.

Thanks Dierdre.  Do you still use vagifem every night?

Yes, I've had a few flare ups recently due to thrush and health anxiety, so not been able to reduce my dose yet. I used to use vagifem 5 times a week and ovestin externally evey night.
