Ovestin
« on: March 27, 2023, 11:53:14 AM »

Hi Everyone
I am using Ovestin for bladder issues, post menopause, I'm 67. I paid to see a consultant who was happy for me to go "off licence" with the dosing regime. It works really well until I reduce the dose. I tried every other day after loading for 4 weeks but the symptoms came back - peeing every 40 minutes. I understand that the amount of estrogen is low but Ovestin seems to be a stronger dose of estrogen than the vaginal pessaries? It's confusing.
I'm worried about using it daily, long term. All the information states that it doesn't act in a systemic way, but it has seriously afftected my sleep. Any help appreciated.

Hello Jaquiw. Do you think Ovestin is stopping you from getting a decent sleep?

I use it daily and have done for two years. Each time I try to reduce it my VA flares. Some days I even need to use it twice a day. It is a small amount of oestrogen and not something I worry about. I think VA really ruins a persons quality of life and anything that can help is vital to use.

Oestrogen pessaries used to have a higher dose of oestrogen and they only needed to be used twice a week. Sadly the amount was reduced but the leaflet was not changed which is why many GPs will say we should only use this treatment twice a week. If twice a week is enough then great but if you are like me and need to use it daily then I would just use it.

If you are hungry, do you not eat?  So if the vagina needs a nightly dose of 'ovestin', .........  ;). Quality of Life is important so if nightly eases symptoms, the go for it.

When I get the need2P I swallow 2 Nurofen capsules, 3 times a day to ease that nip as the urine flow shuts off.

Let us know how you get on.

I use the pessaries and Ovestin topically every day because I need to. It's impossible for me to live with the symptoms of Vaginal Atrophy and on doctors advice I will continue to use it daily, it's all about quality of life. The aging process is tough enough with other symptoms going on but at least my nether regions no longer play me up!  :)

Thanks all, that’s reassuring. Yes the Ovestin affects my sleep, I seem to be in a minority with this, but it’s that or the bladder issues.

Hi Jaquiw - there are various different preparations for vaginal atrophy and containing different active ingredients. They are all listed here: https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/local.php

You will see that the main ones contain either estradiol or estriol. They both work on the vaginal receptors to do what's necessary! The dosages are not comparable. The dose of each product is designed to be the average to do the same job - though many women will require more than average, and some less.

Also even with a given oestrogen the quantities are expressed in different ways eg in micrograms or percentages. What is it you would like to compare? Sometimes a bit of maths is required to compare them! ...and Ovestin is more concentrated (at 0.1 %) than the generic Gynest estriol cream (at 0.01 %).

In the licensed dosages then systemic absoprtion in minimal though if you are using Ovestin in large quantities (larger and more frequently than the licensed amount) then logically the amount sborbed may be higher, though once the tissues are plumped up absorption declines to some extent.

In what way do you feel it is affecting your sleep negatively, when used daily?
