Another polyp - no other options but hysterectomy
« on: November 13, 2022, 09:53:36 PM »

Hi

not sure I want advice, just shoulders to cry on really as I kind of guessed this would happen.

I've been in and out of hospital over the past three months with bleeding, polyps, then a polyp removal, then bleeding recurring with new polyp. We've tried everything, mirena, mirena+noresthisterone, reduced the oestrogen part of HRT - not that I was absorbing it anyway but the 50mcg implant seems to have worked best so far.

I had my third polyp removed in June and they've just found another one. Obgyn said no, sorry, this can't go on. Well, I could have another polyp removed and then stop HRT for good but I'm not sure I can cope with that.

They want to get this done before christmas and I'm scared to death tbh. I don't want to have it, but it looks like I'll have recurring polyps for as long as I'm on HRT, and off HRT I don't have a great quality of life. Although, to be honest, at the moment it's making a difference, but only a small one, but it would at least give me some flexibility over my estrogen dose if I didn't have to keep worrying about bleeding.

i just feel so scared now, I know this isn't an unusual operation of course, but a lot can go wrong and the easiest thing in the world would be to just give up on HRT as the polyps seem to be caused by it (that's what they told me the last time after they analysed everything).

My gp, obgyn and meno specialist all tell me I've been incredibly unlucky, which is just...great, thanks.

Can I just sit here on this thread and weep quietly in the corner?

Hi applejack

Don’t weep quietly in the corner, we’re all here for you so weep out loud as that will help relieve your sorrow with it all.

I’m sorry I don’t have any experience of polyps or hysterectomy, but a lot of ladies on MM have. So just wanted to respond, to say I expect someone will be along soon who has experienced what your going through.

U weep away.   Why do 'they' want it out B4 C.mas?  Is this because they are concerned about other issues that might arise or due to the proposed Nurses' strike?   I assume that each polyps is sent for histology?

Do 'they' not realise that some form of HRT will probably be required ........ this route needs to be discussed B4 surgical intervention.  R U anaemic?

There is a support group - 'histersisters' springs to mind  :-\

Have a  :bighug:  and a box 'kleenex'.  Hormones as well as difficult decisions can cause us to feel weepy.

I feel for you, I am also facing having a hysterectomy before Christmas, as my womb is not tolerating the progesterone. Like you I have tried every combination of HRT, all causing bleeding and pain. Can I ask what your symptoms are? And how the polyps were diagnosed? xx

Hello Applejack.

I am so sorry that you are in this position but perhaps you can take comfort from knowing that the operation will solve your problem.

Bleeding on HRT is very common as you know and often the only way to resolve it is to reduce HRT or come off it completely. The hysterectomy may therefore be a blessing in disguise for you.

Please keep posting and wishing you well.

Take care.

Ah bless you, you're all so lovely.

CLKD they want it out before christmas because it will avoid them doing a polypectomy and then a hysterectomy - she wants to do a 2 for 1 to save putting me under twice. And the reason for the rush is because with a polyp in there, even though it's unlikely to be anything bad, she doesn't want to risk it. She's just being careful which I guess I should be grateful for.

Mandss - my symptoms were basically bleeding. Initially I just bled constantly from April-nov 2021. I had a cervical polyp removed in April on the NHS but the bleeding didn't stop (because there was another one in there but they hadn't done a hysteroscopy so didn't know). In november my partner got private health cover which made a massive difference. I had an untrasound which picked up another polyp. After that was removed I was bleed free until Feb this year so had another scan which picked up another polyp which was removed in June.  Bleed free until October then yup,you guessed it, another one. So basically bleeding, then scans.

Kathleen this is what I keep telling myself. I only need worry about the oestrogen part of HRT and no bleeding ever again, no chance of endometrial cancer in the future (they'll take out ovaries and cervix so that's two less cancers to worry about). There are lots of positives.  But I keep being stupid and doing a Dr Google and reading about all the risks and horror stories (even though every woman I know who has had one has been absolutely fine and thankful they did it). I'm also horribly squeamish and dreading the mess that'll be created for the weeks following. I'm terrible considering I've had periods and given birth!

What mess?  You will be told not to lift anything heavier than a kleenex tissues ;-).

Make sure that you have plenty of quick meals in the freezer/store cupboard.  How does your partner feel?

A kleenex tissue  ;D ;D I'll be like a Victorian lady passing out on the chaise longue and requiring smelling salts.

Mess, you know, bleeding and all that yuk. I passed so many weird bits after the first polyp I thought there was an alien in there. Really unpleasant.

My partner does most of the housework and cooking anyway (I'm lazy, basically) and he's quietly considerate without making a fuss so I'm all good on that front. My son is at uni so when he's back in December he can help as well but he'll have to be prompted because he's a bit dozy (I think this is an occupational hazard of being a young man).

I do the laundry and cat litter duties which I am more than happy to delegate for a few weeks.

The thing is I've just come off mirtazapine and am having crap withdrawal symptoms, the worst of which is a histamine intolerance thing and I'm terrified I'll react to the anaesthetic and die or something. Yes, my anxiety has also gone through the roof as a result of the withdrawal so none of this is helping at all.

Why did U stop the Mirtazapine?  On top of everything else  ::) no wonder you are weepy.

If you are worried about the anaesthetic do what I did: ask to take to the Anaesthetist, usually a Surgeon has a Team of regular medics who all work together.  I had a couple of chats with 'mine' prior to two lots of surgical intervention - she was very empathetic, taking on board my requirements.

Keep us up to date!

Well apart from the weight gain it gave me oedema and my cholesterol went up. You can't bloody win.

An appointment is being made with the gynae who is actually doing the op so I can chat through my worries with her, and tomorrow I get to chat with the obgyn who referred me so I can ask her anything I like for ten minutes. She is extremely patient and seems completely unphased by daft questions. She's really nice.

Let us know how you get on.   Paying for treatment should give plenty of appt time for discussions.  Do take a list of concerns with you.

How do you feel mandss?   Rushing round cooking/freezing/ironing  ::)

I advise that one wears button down nighties and not pull over the head designs as it can be a bit stiff and sore after surgery and really, 1 can't be bothered to lift those arms  ::).  and comfy panties ;-)
