Hello! Newbie here!
« on: September 30, 2022, 06:15:13 PM »

Hello everyone,
Delighted to have joined the forum and be part of #teammeno! Sometimes it can feel completely overwhelming with the craziness of the menopause and supportive/informative  groups such as this one, are vital in keeping us all sane!! My current biggest issue relates to acid reflux/heartburn all of a sudden. Just wondering if this is a symptom of the menopause with the hormonal changes and links to the gut. Does anyone know??  :o

Hi Carabelle,

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know the answer to your question but this forum has been a lifeline to me.

I only started HRT myself in august, but the ladies here are so lovely

Yep, it's a perimenopause symptom  ::)

:welcomemm:  as oestrogen levels drop so muscles may become lax = aches and pains, hiatus hernia and reflux are common conditions.  I managed with Milk of Magnesia for years to keep symptoms at bay, then developed an irritating cough: continual : which is caused by reflux.  Omeprazolol in the morning helps any heart burn.  I do oqccaiosnally wake around 2.30 a.m. with deep pain behind the chest bone for which I chew 'Rennies'.

Browse round.  Make notes.

Thank you CLKD! That’s really good to know. I was prescribed Omeprazole and Peptac by the GP back in a June which did the trick. Seems to have flared up again - possibly stress related? Who knows? Oh the joys! xx

I'm taking Lansolprazole at the moment, I was told the acid reflux is an age thing caused by muscles weakening etc. Men suffer too so not sure if it's just menopausal. I get it really bad when I'm anxious and always have done even before I was post meno. Being overweight  makes it worse too. Trying to watch my diet but I can have a curry one night and be fine but not another night, so who knows..

Same here too. Tomatoes are a favourite for giving me acid indigestion. ☹️

Hello ladies.

I haven't had this symptom of the menopause  however I have read a lot about digestive issues due to a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis.

I understand that eating fatty foods can put stress on the valve at the top of the stomach plus these foods also stay in the stomach a long time which causes pressure Apparently including as many easy to digest plant foods can be helpful.

I realise that everyone is different but I thought I would pass on this information and encourage anyone to do their own research.
I understand that this condition is very common so there is likely to be lots of information available.

Wishing everyone well.

Thanks Kathleen, Im trying to make notes of certain foods that cause it and change my diet but sometimes I get it even though Ive eaten a certain food that I've been fine with before. Stress however seems to be my main cause and acid will flare up even though I've eaten nothing.
Lying on my right side is worse at night too but more pillows help.
I didn't suffer with acid during menopause so I really think my problem is age and/or stress related.

It’s the aging process unfortunately and the time in your life when you have to work out what foods make your acid reflux worse.  It can be very depressing realising you can’t eat the foods you always have done in the past, my food shopping and cooking bears no resemblance to what I used to buy and cook when much younger.

Lying on your side is not good if you suffer with reflux, best propped up and laying on your back is best. Agreed stress makes it worse, but it's not easy to avoid that sometimes.

I’m wondering if it’s mainly stress related.  I didn’t think I was/am particularly stressed but maybe my body is telling me something different. I found out In August that I’ve gallstones and I’m waiting on an appointment to see the specialist. The wait could be lengthy apparently! Don’t think the gallstone thing impacts on reflux issues from what the gp said back in June. Could it though? Just wondering…

Yes, it certainly can cause acid reflux, my sister has gallstones and has flare ups if she eats the wrong foods. She takes Omeprazole to ease her acid reflux when needed.
