Irregular periods and migraine while on HRT
« on: September 13, 2022, 12:05:16 PM »

Hi and thank you for accepting my membership. I'm 49. I started Evorel 50 sequi and conti patches 3 months ago. I tried them because I have long covid since Nov 2020 with little improvement and heard some people were benefitting from HRT. My periods initially topped when I got covid having had a very regular 21 day cycle since 13. Each vaccine triggered a period and I also had a couple of irregular ones but had been without for 3 months before starting.

I used to get hormonal migraine which completely stopped as a small mercy when I got covid/LC.

My periods have continued to be irregular on the patches and I suddenly started with dryness a few weeks ago (how naiive was I to think dryness was only an issue during sex so didn't think that'd be an issue 😂?!). My GP added a 25mg oestrogen patch to the 50mg I was on and also added a local cream. I started these a week ago. The progestogen dose is staying the same.

Sorry for the essay before the question but wanted to share all info. I had a migraine for 2 weeks which finally finished yesterday. And I realise the link was it started the day I went back to oestrogen only and stopped within a few hours of applying the combined patch.

I haven't discussed with my GP yet as I only made the connection last night and I wanted to see if it happens again next month. Also to clarify, I didn't start the extra oestrogen until a week in to the headache, so that wasn't the trigger.

I just wondered if others have noticed a link with migraine and the progestogen break?

My other questions are period related. When should I get a period while on the patches? My memory is shocking but I think I read on here that I should bleed on the withdrawal of the progestogen, so during the oestrogen only 2 weeks?

If my periods continue to be irregular on the patches, is that a concern, does it mean the dose isn't right? And which component would be advisable to change if it is likely dose related?

I've been reading the forum for a few weeks, it's a great resource. Thank you all for your honesty and help on the board, it makes my first post a bit less daunting. And sorry again for such a long first post.

Welcome :)

Sorry to hear you have long covid since Nov 2020 with little improvement.
I had COVID - it lasted about a week.

I never knew hrt helped COVID.

I personally shied away from the vaccines.
I personally think the whole COVID thing is a control thing.
It felt artificial and weird.
I know many who had weird effects from the vaccines, and also many vaccinated who had covid more than once.
Still, I respect that others have pro-vaccination views and we can all live together peacefully.

I have little migraine experience, except I got visual migraines as a side-effect from antidepressants, I only had one, years later, probably from stress.

I never heard of using Conti and sequi together.
I’m naive and it’s got me into a lot of trouble.

The essay is ok.
I hope to help, I only came on as I saw you had no replies.
I hope you see this.

Migraine for 2 weeks  sounds awful, I know migraine sufferers, and it sounds horrible.

I suggest working closely with your GP.
Do you have a menopause clinic?

I don’t want to alarm you, too much oestrogen/not enough progesterone may cause bleeds, it did with me.
I shied away from my GP for months, but got it checked, scanned, hysteroscopy, no cancer,  it’s rare, but they like to check. I felt much better after seeing my GP.

I did a search on here for "migraine" "progesterone" and came up with nothing, I might have used the search engine wrong. I did a search on google and that threw up results.

With sequi, you get a period during the progesterone break, same with Conti, I think, however, due to my diazepam addiction, and it’s cross tolerance with the metabolites of progesterone, and the nightmare that benzodiazepines dependent women have with progesterone variations, I take it daily under medical supervision.
You could do a quick google, or a search on here, it’s called “withdrawal bleed”

I would let your GP know what you are doing, they should answer your questions.

Don’t be sorry for the long post, I have posted long essays on here, and got lots of help.
