Victory over Japan Day
« on: August 14, 2022, 09:03:57 AM »

"14th August 1945 - V-J Day, or Victory over Japan Day, marks the end of World War II, one of the deadliest and most destructive wars in history.  "

Remembering those who served in the Jungles of the Far East.

Although the World celebrated earlier in 1945, most of these prisoners were all but forgotten and never received the huge welcome afforded to other returning service personnel.

They were told never to talk about what had happened because the World had moved on and no one would be interested.  The Government didn't want the horrors to find their way into the Press  :'(.  Many were unable to, a few did.

I will wear my badge today with Pride.

Thank you CLKD. My mum's first husband died in Singapore in 1942 aged just 21 while she was pregnant with their son. My mum spoke about her sadness that on VE Day it was as if people had forgotten that the war was still being fought outside Europe. She still joined in the celebrations though.

Did she live to get the 'compensation' in the late 1990s?

I think that the government of the day realised that those in the Far East had been abandoned  :'(

We need to get to the Arboretum again.
