Why have periods completely stopped on HRT?
« on: January 20, 2022, 05:05:20 AM »

Hi, apologies if this has been answered somewhere before, but struggling to find. I'm 49, perimenopausal,  various symptoms, anxiety, trouble sleeping and low mood being the worst ones..started on HRT ( oetrogel 2 pumps and progesterone 2 tabs 14 days a month)4 months ago, feeling a lot better up until this month, where I've had a rough couple of weeks on the progesterone part. Usually I feel quite good when I take it.

My question is, my periods were fairly regular still, but for the last 2 months no bleed. I understood that the progesterone would cause a bleed as the womb lining sheds each month. So, why have my periods stopped ? Apologies if this is a basic question !

Also, for info statred on testogel last week.

Thanks in advance!

Meant to add I'm not pregnant, definitely not ! Could it be that my oestrogen levels are so low thar they don't meet the levels needed for progesterone to do its womb- lining-shedding job? Maybe I need more pumps, especially as I feel so bad over  last few weeks? My sleep jaz gone to pot again also.

Others may know better but my understanding is that hrt smooths symptoms etc but won’t make you have a period if your body isn’t producing any/enough of its own hormones any more. I haven’t had a period since September when I started taking continuous utrogeston - at review with menopause doctor in December she wasn’t worried about it and said I may or may not have any more periods depending on what my body is doing underneath the hrt. I found my periods last year very erratic - longer/shorter cycle, heavy/light/normal and they really didn’t tie in with sequential progesterone very much either. I had a break off about 3 months once (even while taking sequential utrogeston). I hope that helps a bit but of course talk to your doctor if you’re worried!

Thank you Helen , really interesting . Unfortunately my doctors don't have a clue about anything peri related , hence why I'm on here ! So perhaps my periods would have started to stop!)over the last couple of months, hrt regardless.

Hi Shamo,
This happened to me too and when I researched it it’s really common and nothing to worry about. I missed two consecutive months in Sept and Oct, I’m the same age, in peri and on the same HRT.
I wouldn’t be without Testogel ☀️

My gp also not terribly knowledgable - I’ve been seeing private menopause specialist - cringingly expensive  :o but I was tired of going around in circles and not getting any answers!

As you're using a sequi regime you would normally expect a bleed. If your lining hasn't built up enough you may not bleed. If your body is overriding the hrt you may bleed at a different time (my own cycle is always stronger than the hrt one). It may be you've felt rough because you're producing a spike in your own progesterone - this has happened to me, no bleed after utro but a very heavy one 2 weeks later. Missing some bleeds won't matter but if you're on a sequi regime and never bleed you should tell your doc.
