I have no issues going to sleep initially but then was waking up in the early hours and couldnt get back to sleep for hours- sonetimes not at all. My son bought me a padded eyemask for a plane journey. It was great on the plane- really dark and comfortable - doesnt press on your eyes or face- but its been a game changer at home too. Even though my bedroom is really dark when i go to sleep , i usually put it on and often i dont wake at all. Otherwise putting it on when i wake or after a loo trip usually means i drop off again quickly. I’ve also discovered the sleepy bookcase podcast which is a calm and gentle story reading app. It really works but the downside is you need to listen in the day to catch up on the story!!!

I've not heard of the Sleepy Bookcase podcast. Thanks for the recommendation Juliee.

I’ve been taking my progesterone vaginally now for 3 wks, because I found I feel better taking that way but my sleep has suffered. So I’ve been taking magnesium glycinate with Vit B6 as recommended by Dr Louise Newson, menopause specialist. I take it with my main meal at night and I’ve been sleeping much better. So will continue and hopefully my sleep quality will continue.

An up date.

Sleep is not perfect but is much better.

I continue on the ketogenic diet as it helps with my weight and banishes reflux. It also helps me sleep better.

Relaxation is key. Having a warm bath an hour before I sleep really helps. I often wake up in the night but as long as I reassure myself that I am safe in my bed, perhaps do a few breathing exercises I can drift off again. The important thing is to accept whatever sleep you get, and feel that lying there is almost as beneficial as sleep. These awakenings are due to adrenaline being released due to my Amygdela being worried about something in my life. I wish I knew what !

If I cannot get back to sleep then I get up, have a cold glass of water, go back to bed and listen to the World service, using my £5 pillow speaker that I bought from Ebay. I concentrate on the news article but due to the warmth of the bed I then drift off. The radio is on an hour timer.

In the morning I get up at 8, whatever sleep I have had, drink a glass of water, and expose myself to light by sitting in the Conservatory.  I am going to buy a light box for the Winter.

Trying to get my sleep fixed is a full time job ! Luckily I am retired from the NHS, so stress has reduced, but 5 months since I retired I have not had any pension payments because of Crapita not up dating my superannuation record for the past 4 years. Trying to get them to correct an error is impossible. No human will talk to you with any useful help as to what to do. I get passed from pillar to post. Luckily my husband is paying our bills.

Haven’t had a full nights sleep for 17 yrs
Still have sweats and wake up fighting to breathe Can go weeks with only a couple of hours a night till I’m so exhausted I can’t function then might get a few nights if 5/6 hours till it starts again
I have a fan running all night and the minimum amount of covers
But no point worrying about it That just makes it worse So accept that this is my life now

Before HRT, I tried every over-the-counter product out there and prescriptions are not an option for me. My problem was falling asleep and then waking up in the middle of the night often. It was affecting my work and social life. As soon as my doctor put me on progesterone, it helped. I also take a very strong CBD gummy an hour before bedtime. There are still times when I have trouble falling asleep still but if I get my weight training and walking in 5x a week it helps even more.

I've tried searching this thread without too much success - just one member mentions using it - but has anyone used The Sleep Clinic? I've done the two free webinars, but was rather turned off by the clock counting down to make me sign up. Also, unusually in 2024, there are no Google or Trustpilot reviews online. On the other hand, I am desperate to get my sleep sorted out, so pretty much willing to try anything!

Another up date.

I have carried on with all the measures I instigated in the past.

In addition to oestrogel and utrogestan I now take 1mg SR melatonin one hour before bed time.  It has completely solved my insomnia. I fall asleep easily and consistently and wake  refreshed . I seem to have had both deep and REM sleep. It has cut down my awakenings, but if I do wake I seem to go back to sleep easily. I do not have any hangover effects the next day.

I am 60 and have suffered from insomnia for the last 5 years. It seems I do not make as much melatonin as I need. I hope this post may help someone, as insomnia can be soul destroying.

I take 1 mg of Circadin an hour before bedtime . It is a 2mg MR tablet , but I use a pill cutter to cut it in half. It still retains some of the modified release properties. It gives me 8 hours of good quality sleep.

Just wondered if anyone has tried Sleep Restriction Therapy, sleep station do it and it's meant to be very effective. Michael Mosley mentions it in his book 4 weeks to better sleep.

Hello ladies.

Sleep isn't too much of a problem for me however I usually feel tired and wired during the day so perhaps the quality of my sleep isn't good even if the quantity isn't too bad. Having said all that I have been awake since 3 am,  goodness knows why!

Martha - You mentioned that you were on a ketogenic diet and I wonder if that has affected your cholesterol levels at all as I believe that can be an issue.

Take care ladies.

MR is modified release. Yes I get it on prescription, but you can buy it from www.biovea.com as a food supplement. Also from www.anastore.com

The ketogenic diet usually improves cholesterol and triglyceride levels, contrary to common belief. It is sugar that is the problem, not fats.
