Help, please!!!
« on: April 12, 2021, 02:22:11 PM »

Hi

I'm new to the forum but am 55 and have been having progressively worse symptoms for the last 10 years. I'm still ovulating every few months and have never tried HRT but am wondering if it could help me. I'm now getting stupid tendon related injuries all the time - I can't lift a full kettle or walk more than about half a mile and every little thing hurts. I can't do any exercise beyond some very very gentle yoga and am at the end of my tether. Still have aging mother and semi-detached daughter to care for and feel about 90. I've always been strong and flexible and my bones and muscles don't seem to be the issue but it's as though all my elastic's perished. My GP practice is hopeless and Covid has made it more like a field triage station so I wanted to go in fore-armed as it were. All the usual scans and blood tests for relevant things have come back clear.

Any suggestions, gratefully received

Did your blood tests include thyroid function and VitD levels?

:welcomemm:  as oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry: inside and out; deep in the ears, scalp, skin, between the toes, nostrils, eyes, vagina  :o we have threads here about that 1  ::)

Also muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Over the counter pain relief should help.  MayB keep a mood/symptom/food diary to chart progress, then decide which symptom you would like to ease first?  Take a list to the GP/Practice Nurse  ;)

Let us know how you get on!

Thanks guys, I’ve had the tests you mentioned (and many others) and thankfully all were fine, and I’ve been doing strength and stretching exercises for the last few years, but have reached a point where it’s next to impossible to do anything without injury. That’s really why I wondered about trying HRT. I can live with the hot flushes etc and the pointless anxiety has abated a bit from how it was, but this physical incapacity is stoping me from functioning. Does anyone have any experience of these symptoms and whether HRT has helped?

In my experience oestrogen is great for joint problems. Mine started to improve even on a low dose, it was the first thing I noticed. And of course, it has all sorts of protective benefits for health in general.

Hi
That’s really encouraging, thank you. I’m seeing my physio (for the first time in person) tomorrow and, as she is also a woman of a ‘certain age’ and on HRT, I’m hoping she can give me a bit of advice. I’ve been really struggling with how broken I feel. Fingers crossed eh?
Thanks again

Hi ChrisB
I’m 55 too and was ovulating on and off same as you.   One of my major problems was very sore joints and pulled achy muscles.  Getting up out of a chair was becoming a major performance. This was very unlike me and really got me down.   I tried stretching, yin yoga type things but nothing really helped.  Over the last 5-10 years I have been having peri symptoms but hadn’t connected all the dots as my periods were still fairly regular.   They were manageable, just about, but the sweats and chills we’re starting to get to me. Sleep wasn’t good either.   Then about 4-5 months ago everything went crazy and anxiety hit me like a train.   Dr tried to put me on anti depressants but the side effects were horrific.  Ended up paying to see a menopause specialist who got me started on HRT a month ago.  I’m not going to pretend it’s been plain sailing, however, the sore joints and muscle pain has already disappeared and even my arthritic hip pain is far less.  The night sweats are a little better and my skin doesn’t itch, bladder problems have also gone.   I do feel nauseous and my anxiety isn’t good but I’ve been told that will improve.    I have been given Propranolol for my anxiety just so I don’t have major panic attacks while the hrt gets to work.  Also take the odd sleeping tablet (Sominex).  Might help you to look into hrt before things get worse?  I wish I’d looked into it sooner.

I had pain in my hips which I assumed was joints wearing out - but it went once I was on hrt. Well worth trying imo. I was also pulling muscles for no reason. Oestrogen didn't help that but testosterone did. You need to be stable on hrt first but if you're still pulling muscles after that then I would consider adding testosterone. They will only prescribe it for libido, mine was zero.
