New to this

Hi, I am new to this. I am now post menopausal but still have debilitating hot flushes which as the weather is warming are coming back with avengence. In addition to this I am losing so much hair. I lost my husband last year and I am so heartbroken it feels like I don't want to do life. I talk to my doctor about my hair loss but she doesn't do anything about it. I am 60 now and can no longer have HRT. I previously had femseven sequi patches as I have migraine with aura. I feel overwhelmed with anxiety and exhausted all of the time due to waking up constantly through the night with the hot flushes. I wonder if any of you have any advice that might help? For many years I have suffered these flushes but the hair loss is devastating.

Hi JulieMartin. I'm so sorry to learn about the loss of your husband and that you are also having to cope with hair loss and horrible meno symptoms.

Is it your GP who has said you can no longer have HRT due to your age? I ask because this is no longer the correct advice unless you have a health condition which might make it inadvisable. I'm 67 and still on Evorel (oestrogen only though as I've had a hysterectomy) and there are other over 60's also still using HRT. You shouldn't have to put up with the hot flushes/sweats which are so debilitating and exhausting.

Your hair loss could very well be due to the tremendous stress you have experienced. It can take quite a few months from when you begin to experience the stress/trauma before it shows up in the hair. It's important that you have had blood tests to make sure your thyroid function is ok and that you are not anaemic. It may be worth consulting a tricologist too.

You will find lots of understanding and support on here. Please ask anything you need to know and someone will usually reply as soon as possible.

Hi Juliemartin, I’m really sorry to read what a terrible time you’ve been through and are facing now.   I am no expert but I know for certain that many ladies well into their 60’s are on hrt and my specialist told me that it is likely that in a few years we will be advised to stay on it for life.   The loss of hormones during menopause impacts on the whole body, not just our reproductive systems.   I don’t know if you could get referred to a specialist maybe but I’d definitely get a second opinion.  Again, sorry this is so rough for you xxx

First of all a huge

You must have a huge gap - do you have support, due to all the distancing during lockdown?  CRUSE will listen - many areas have waiting lists so do contact your local group when you feel ready.  Run by the bereaved, 4 the bereaved.

Your GP is a little behind with advice, most ladies keep taking HRT for years after 60.  MayB ask for a referral to a menopause clinic for further advice?  Not a gynaecologist, because they don't know much more than many GPs seem to do.

Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use, it gives a sense of control and charts progress.

Hair loss has no rhyme or reason - have you looked at the Alopecia UK support group?  Matt Lucas is on the 1 Show right now and has been contacting children - he lost his hair at age 6.  It may be a combination of your husband's death and hormones ....... would you be up for wearing a well made wig?

Let us know how you get on.
