Prolapse - information on Womans Hour today.
« on: March 12, 2021, 10:46:44 AM »

I've just been listening to this. Good to hear this problem, which affects so many women, being discussed. It will be available for listening from tomorrow I think. It covered the use of vaginal ring pessary which is a treatment often not offered instead of surgery. Also advice on how to protect and strengthen the pelvic floor. Worth a listen for anyone experiencing prolapse problems. "The first UK Clinical Guideline for the use of vaginal pessaries in pelvic organ prolapse was launched last week. The multidisciplinary Guideline Group included 3 pessary users who co-developed the resource. Being written against the background of the Baroness Cumberlege report ‘First Do No Harm’ from July 2020, it aims to help women learn, understand and be empowered to ask about whether a pessary is the right option for them"

I heard this too and so glad pessaries are to be thought of before surgery . I had a hysterectomy to help with prolapse but 5 or so years later it all came back with urinary incontinence. Investigated pessaries and only offered rings or gel horn so bought an inflataball and never looked back , have been using this for years , buy a new one every 4-5 months. Ended up with smallest one tho started with largest as ithe GP said I needed largest ring which kept falling out .

It’s not 100 pc perfect but say about 90 pc . Would love to have surgery but don’t think there’s any type
At present that will fix it .

Thanks Taz2...this is very timely. I'm experiencing a moderate prolapse and it is hugely distressing, and the future just looks grim. It's incredibly disappointing that there are so few options for this condition. But it's the old "if a man experienced this there'd be a cure" thing. Surgery is a medieval approach. Please stop with the rovers on Mars and just sort this out first? Please?

I'll have a listen.

I hated the way I felt when I first discovered mine. It almost seemed like there was an alien lurking in my vagina! I don't think the psychological aspect of it is taken into account very often by consultants but I did find the pelvic specialist nurses were very understanding about how it made me feel.

I hope that you feel less distressed as you become more used to what's happened Iris67. It seemed that mesh was a great way forward at the time but obviously this caused horrendous problems in some women and men as it's used for hernia repair too. I'm not sure what trials are ongoing at the moment for better repair of prolapse.

Be thankful you're not a ewe. This is the treatment they get https://www.shearwell.co.uk/prolapse-ewe-spoon
And approx 50% of them don't survive.

Maybe I'm being thick, but I don't understand how it works. Poor creatures  :o

I haven't had much success this time with my usual fixes so I called the gp, who's referred my to a gynaecologist. I'm a bit scared they'll say surgery. Will listen to the programme, thanks Taz2 💐

And will check out the Inflataball. That's a new one on me.

It's good to find out as much as possible I think. I'm going to have to get back on the uro-gynae list too. Surgery worked for six years though which has gave me a reprieve

Six years of being symptom-free is great!

Naively, I'd thought that once you've had surgery it would last indefinitely. I guess the body doesn't stay the same.

It's all to do with laxity of muscles I believe. I had a hysterectomy for a uterine prolapse which immediately puts you at risk of further prolapses. At the same time I had an anterior repair for the bladder prolapse. I think it's around 30 per cent of women experience further prolapses after five years which is where knowledge of other treatments such as the vaginal pessaries are important.

Guess it depends on your point of view. Use of baler twine and given a red mark means no longer coping with prolapse !

Good point. Do they go off for meat once they've lambed? I'm not sure I'm ready to go to slaughter yet so I'll skip the baler twine/harness and red mark/ear tag if you don't mind!  ;D

The little inflataball is exactly that . Like a little balloon with a long tail . You insert it , then blow it up
With a tiny pump . One squeeze does it and then you are sorted for day . The little tail hangs out like a tampon string . You can push it inside but it never stayed there for me . At nighttime you just deflate and pop out . So easy .

The Stress no More Site has them plus another pessary which looks good . Like a ring pessary but a slightly different shape and very easy to use and the reviews say they are superior to the nhs rings. Can also be removed at night .

So dont suffer ladies . I run ,
and lift heavy things though try not to .

Hi there,
I am currently experiencing a prolapse problem, ie after a spot of gardening I know can easily feel my uterus (I think) poking out.... I knew I had a prolapse a year ago but as it wasn’t actually externally visible I chose to ignore it... I guess now I need to tackle this problem but would be great fun if anyone out there could give me a little more I formation. For example, can this be fixed with pelvic floor exercise, once it is that far progressed? I really would like to avoid surgery, but still want to do gardening! I cannot imagine my life without gardening.... I assume I have to see my GP next week - any insider tips regarding pessaries? The inflataball sound good too... I keep swing ads about the Kegel8 machine - is that any good/useful?
Help please... it scares me to see my insides falling out...
Thanks, ladies!

I tried everything before surgery - consultant said no amount of exercise or machines would make any difference to me and I  proved that . If it’s mild and you are young then it must help as people will attest.

Surgery fine for 5 years or so but now the inflataball keeps me sorted . Problem is you have no idea of what size fits but I just started with biggest and worked down . The smallest was perfect so would have saved a lot if I’d started with it. I like it as it comes out at night . There is a new ring which has 5 sides
and gets good reviews but again you’d need to go through them to find the one that fits . When they don’t fit they fall out either straightaway or an hour or so later .
