Help for vaginal atrophy
« on: January 31, 2021, 04:45:40 PM »

Hi I am a new member but have visited this site often and felt the support from reading other women’s menopause journeys inspiring. I was diagnosed in 2001 with Lichen Sclerosus after initially telling doc what I thought it was after a year of gp visits! (but that’s a whole other story.)

I always associated menopause with hot flushes, mood swings, headaches amongst other symptoms. I am 60 now and post menopausal and considered myself lucky to have got through the menopause without too much hassle. That was until vaginal atrophy set in! I have never experienced pain upon sexual intercourse like it. Felt like burning pain whilst having sex and took me about 4 days to feel comfortable again down there. Then to add to this the Lichen Sclerosis flares up especially when i’m Stressed. So pain internally with VA and externally with LS! The sad thing is I felt so alone and given up hope of ever feeling ‘normal’ again in the lady garden area.

I have been on vagifem for 2 years and been using YES oil and water based applicator lubricants for that time too but still incredibly painful. Dreaded any intimacy as knew I was going to suffer for days after. Then 2 weeks ago ordered some Sea Buckthorn Oil capsules after reading up on trials on this supplement and what a game changer. I already have felt the difference, cannot believe it.
Take 2 capsules twice a day for first 2 weeks then 1 capsule twice a day thereafter. They are quite expensive £21.49 for 60. I ordered the Pharma Nord omega 7 from Holland & Barrett rather than H&B own brand. Just wanted to share my experience with others because if it helps just one woman to enjoy a normal sex life it’s worth putting it out there. Considering ringing my doctor to tell them to recommend trying it. I realise we were all different and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another. I was so desperate that I would have tried anything.
So that’s it ladies, I really hope this has been helpful.

Got to sort the insomnia out next, any ideas!

I just received Sea Buckthorn order as a result of another thread. This is useful back-up info. Thanks. Do you take the two together or separately initially and with or without food? How quickly do you notice improvement? Sorry can't help with insomnia. I have M.E. and sleep is plentiful if non-restorative at times. Good luck!

Hi postmeno3

Hope you can read this reply as not sure if posting in right place! First 2 weeks take 2 capsules in morning with breakfast and 2 with evening meal. Then 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 with evening meal. Literally 2 weeks and the difference is unbelievable for me but hang in there some people say they noticed difference after 6 weeks.Good luck and hope you see results.

Up the 'vagifem' to nightly for as long as it takes to get comfy, sometimes 1 at noon and another at night.  Also keeping the vaginal area supple you may require 'ovestin' for the outer labia etc..

If you have a need to pee sensation mayB take 'nurofen' or similar to relax the spincter.

Sleep happens if we stop worrying about not sleeping.  It's self fulfilling.  A good night regime, switch off gadgets at least 45 mins. B4 bed as blue light is stimulating.  I have a warm bath, good book and cuppa B4 bed.  Works most nights.

Hi
I'm a new member today and vaginal atrophy is my reason for joining. Reading jeaniebeanie60's post was like deja vu for me. I can't  describe the pain any better.  I'm 62 now and was put on Vagifem during the menopause because of the pain. I was on vagifem for a over 10 years until last autumn when inexplicably it stopped having any effect and within a week the pain had come back, building up in intensity daily. Having an office job sitting down most of the time has been awful, with constant pain. My GP suggested Ovestin cream and, as a lot of you will know, I took it nightly to start then twice a week. After 3 months I would say the improvement was about 50% but I had to come off it for 2 weeks before going back on it again. I've been back on it for 3 weeks. The pain came back to it's full level during the 2 week break so I  was back to square one.  I'm  certainly going to try the Buckthorn capsules recommended in the post. I've been examined by a nurse and a GP and there's nothing to see.  I've got a phone appt with a specialist at my local hospital in a couple of weeks but I'm not feeling very optimistic about that.  Whatever happens I'm so relieved to find that I'm not alone.

Hi Guinevere, welcome to the forum. There is a Vaginal Atrophy Facebook support group, which is private. It's worth joining.

No good having a 'phone appt for vaginal problems  ::).   Often with VA there isn't anything to see, a good GP will prescribe on symptoms.  'vagifem' often needs inserting every night and 'ovestin' alternate nights in order to ease symptoms.

Is it safe to use Ovestin while using Vagifem?
