Coming off HRT
« on: October 18, 2020, 03:07:42 PM »

Hello
Please could I have some advice. I'm coming off HRT.
I am intolerant to utrogestan,  orally and vaginally.

I've stopped taking the utrogestan now and I've been cutting back my estradiol from 2 pumps to 1 pump gradually and will keep cutting back until I stop.

However I've been having some silent migraines that leave me wiped out and can make it difficult to speak.

Can please ask will these silent migraines be linked to stopping the estradiol?

Am I right to be slowly cutting back on the estradiol over a period of about 3 weeks?

I'm 57 and was taking it sequentially.
Last week I had a bleed.

Thank you

Hi Felix

I stopped HRT just over a week ago, I was on Utrogestan, I tried it orally and vaginally and it didn’t suit me.  I’m also histamine intolerant so struggled with estrogen too.  I too have had a bleed and I’m getting daily migraines.  I think all to be expected as I ween my body back off HRT.
My Dr at Newson told me I could just come straight off as I was on a low dose.  Just thought I’d share, hope it helps.

Good luck xx

Thank you for sharing.
I appreciate you taking time to post.
I'm slowly reducing the estradiol and I'm down to one pump now. I hope to be off in a couple of weeks.
The silent migraines are difficult and interfering with my ability to work.
I don't know if they would be worse if I stopped the estradiol quickly?
I've been having some soreness around my urethra so I might try the intrarosa pessaries again as these seemed like a good alternative to Vagifem.
I've noticed I'm getting up more in the night to pee.  I guess it's because I don't have the levels of HRT to keep everything working as well down there. I guess the sweats will start soon too.
Any other people's experience of coming off HRT would be appreciated.
Thanks
Felix 😀

Hi Felix. Have you had these migraines before? If not it's important to get them checked especially as it's affecting your ability to speak. How long do they last?

Felix I’ve come off oestrogel and been three weeks now. My urethra has felt sore as has my bladder. Do you think this is less oestrogen and needs to readjust?

Felix, sorry to hear about your silent migraines, they are very scary when you first start having them but it is not unusual for them to start at menopause.

I started having them at the onset of menopause and it took me a long time to find a solution.  You can read my story in depth on my compounded hormones thread in the Alternative Therapies section on here but briefly, mine were caused by generic hormone instability and oestrogen spikes which were caused by all types of synthetic progesterone and Utrogestan (which I can never use again).  Generally speaking but not always, migraines with aura are caused by oestrogen spikes and the problem I had with Utrogestan was that it caused severe hormone instability and subsequent oestrogen spikes because 100mg was too much in one hit.

During the early part of menopause, I had to keep my oestrogen levels very high to keep the migraines away but now I am very post menopause and on a continuous combined HRT regime, I can get away with a lower dose of oestrogen.

It could be that your reduction in oestrogen has kicked them off and you might find they subside once your hormone levels stabilise.  I'm afraid only time will tell.

My silent migraines sometimes start with a blind spots but I always have visual disturbance for 30 minutes (scintillating scotoma) which gradually disappears to the upper sight field but I do not have a headache.  They leave me feeling tired and spaced out for 72 hours.  Is this similar to your experience?  Mine follow a very definite pattern and I had them properly diagnosed by a neurologist and a migraine specialist.

Did you have migraines with the progesterone part of your regime?

I hope that helps.

Interested to hear about your migraines as I started getting them ...as did my mum when hormones went mad.  (she doesn't get them now however...she is in her late 70s, but hasn't had them for ages)  Mine seem to be worse lately...and I am on utrogesten.  I don't get the aura (I had one ages ago but not since) but the stabbing pain, extreme fatigue and weirdly enough ,,hunger.  I  take sumatriptan but they are zonking me out so have to be careful when I can take one.  I feel so sorry for you as when I have one I can barely think straight. They are horrid

Hi

Read this post with interest.  Just to say that not all progesterone is the same - I can now only tolerate Femonston - which has a much kinder progesterone- might be worth looking up if you are still suffering.

Hi Mariawd

I was on Femonston 2/10 before and during menopause, now I'm over 50 I'm now on Femonston conti - its the only HRT I can now tolerate, as its one of the few with dydrogesterone rather than norethisterone -  others give me terrible mood swings, depression, water retention/bloating and migraines  - tablets rather than patches but the quality of life seems to outweigh the risks.   Gel and the Utro tablets were terrible for me, as were patches

Thanks Nairn.
I hated the gel...impossible the get the dose right and hated the faffing around with putting it on my arms or thighs...
I’m 55 and on Femonston 2/10 now...hope it sorts me out.
