Vulva red patch
« on: October 07, 2020, 10:37:30 AM »

Hi I suffer from VA  and recently went to GP
She has now referred me to gyne saying that she thinks it should be checked as it has not healed after 2 weeks.
Really I am just seeking some reassurance as to what it could be other than cancer whilst waiting for appointment.

Has anyone else maybe had a red patch like this on vulva she said it is small and not a lump.
I can't see it when I look.
Thanks for any help.

It could be anything and it is good she is referring you, and also that it is flat. I have a red patch, also flat, which has been there for nearly three months, so I have seen a GUM specialist privately and going to a vulva dermatologist later this week.

I have this too, as well as soreness generally there which has worsened over a few weeks. I was just thinking it is part of the vulval atrophy I also have which seems to have become uncomfortable since the heating has been on and I have started to wear trousers again. I thought perhaps it was a sore caused by friction on the dry, thin skin.  I have a Drs appointment to check on Friday.
Hope it is something simple like that.

The dermatologist thought the red patch was just inflammation. She prescribed dermovate at night on the red patch, an antibacterial cream in the morning on vulva, and to use 50/50 ointment as a barrier/ moisturiser at least 3 times a day. I can't see the red patch now, but will let her check it in a week or two.

The trousers may not be helping things! I rarely wear trousers now, and stick to gusset free tights with skirts or dresses. You can get 100 denier ones for winter.

That's good news.  :)

I know re:trousers but where do you get gusset free tights from? I couldn't see any on the M and S website and I'm almost afraid to search for them.... ;D

I checked my red patch (having applied a tiny bit of 1% hydrocortisone for a couple of days last week) and it has reduced in size so I think mine is down to inflammation too. It looks like there is a line through it - like a tiny split was there. I don't feel sore in that particular spot anymore either like I did before. Hoping Vagifem will eventually make the whole area less sensitive.

Good to know the hydrocortisone worked.

I use two companies for gusset free tights, UK Tights and TightsTightsTights. I have never ever seen them available in shops, so its an online job  :)

YUK tights  ;D.   I was never comfy in a skirt/dress but Dad wouldn't see his daughters in trousers/jeans.  Anyone remember sanitary pads with belts  :o, I hate stockings too .  I have cotton panties changed daily ....

It's about managing the sore/tender areas, Trial and Error  :-\

Thanks JP  :)

Not managing sore areas well today. Day 3 of Vagifem but (non offensive) discharge has returned making area damp and irritated  :sigh:

Can I ask is it normal to have this with VF, and is it likely to settle?

I used to live in jeans....

The vagina cleanses itself so any excess 'vagifem' may well leak.  That is good at this stage.

Well, it is early days so not sure what to say, but I think I have read about this happening to others on Jane's FB group. Maybe someone else here has experienced this. "Keep calm and carry on" is my best advice at the moment.

Tntoast..replied to you in other thread.  It is residue from fillers in Vagifem.  Good sign...means your body is absorbing estrogen and tossing out what is not needed.  I get it every time I use vagifem (5 days a week) and need to change undies twice a day but much prefer discharge than the alternative.  Have you thought about Estring?  My GP suggested this as an option but felt I may not be able to insert due to severeness of my VA but many women prefer it.  From what I understand, Estring does not have fillers.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Whatsupwiththis

Thanks for your replies... :)

Been to GP this a.m.

She said atrophy is worst on vulva and area around urethra looks v red (although latter doesn't cause me any problems) and she could see skin had been bleeding and was v 'traumatised'.
She has prescribed some estriol cream to use nightly on the outside and just inside, as well as a cream beginning with T for the urethra. She's going to ring me in a couple of weeks and see how I am getting on.

After reading some of the experiences on here I think I will need something internally too, eventually. I'm hoping that the cream might make things feel more comfortable so I can use the Vagifem again or possibly the Estring as you suggest.

I could cope with some discharge but I was having to change a panty liner and underwear so often and feeling so damp it was making me feel awful.....as well as horribly sore....

GP also said she would refer me to dermatology if things don't improve. So I'm happy with that and will see what happens.

 Jutee

My red patch was small and flat and turned out to be inflammation around a tiny tear in the skin. It was there for about 3 weeks until I started to use 1% Hydrocortisone ointment on it which calmed the inflammation. I know steroids not recommended generally there, but GP was ok with my having used it twice a day for a couple of days as I didn't have a prescription for what the skin really needs - oestrogen.

Maybe yours could be something like this...
