Peat free - didn't grow much when we tried, 3 years our plants struggled  :-\

No hedgehogs for 4 nights  :-\ ...... we went away last week for several days so no 'extras' put out  :'(

Sorry to hear that CLKD.  The RHS have an advice page for getting to most out of peat free compost.

https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/Profile?pid=441

Peat-free brands often recommend specific fertilisers for use with their compost: this is not a marketing ploy, as different formulations have different balances of nutrients. Use either the recommended product or one with a similar nutrient balance – compare fertilisers by checking the NPK ratio and the trace-element content quoted on the packaging.

:thankyou: but we feel that we shouldn't require 'extras' in order for compost to do our seedlings/plants any good.  We do make our own compost which is sieved into plastic sacks: from past compost purchases: stood in the shade and used when necessary to bulk up borders and pot plants.  It's the context of the mixture that seems to be lacking in many 'compost' products.  This morning DH put 5 bags of sieved home-made around the holly bush, with flowers on, which began life as a 2" tall rescue from a guttering  ::).  He did a Good Weed around the bush, left it for a week and then added the compost this morning, hopefully worms will do their work.

The pair of swans nesting in the pond down the road have successfully hatched eight babies. I do not know very much about swans. The parents are very organised by getting the cygnets to swim in a group and the parents one on each side. The ducklings hatched in April are about three quarter of adult size now and their adult plumage is beginning to show. The ducklings follow the swans in a group, and on the grass bank they all walk in a line. It is quite comical. Local people feed the ducks and swans bread which I know is not good for them. I worry about the birds as careless people leave the plastic bread wrapper behind so the wrapper comes with me to the nearest bin ten years away. Some people are so lazy.

Bread isn't bad in that it keeps them 'going' but the plastic should be taken home, which Planet are these people on!!!

Have you got a 'croc'?  If so go out with a torch, pick them off the plants and squash them?  I didn't think that they liked marigolds  :o

Whats a croc CLKD? They def like the marigold plugs (never had a problem with marigold's when large & flowering but then again I've always used nemotodes up till this year). Thankfully the peas & sweet peas are untouched!

'croc' as in very large slip on foot wear ;-).  And stamp ........

I can't grow marigolds here.  They simply don't like it!!  Your sweet peas etc. will be next  :D.  Get a hedgehog ;-).

Not going out to see this morning, it is chucking it down!  Lovely weather for slugs  >:(
