We had a pair of collard doves several years ago, she was a lovely pale lilac colour - until the sparrow hawk got her  :'(

Oh those sparrowhawks.  We get a bit speciesist and try to scare them off, but in reality they are only trying to feed themselves and their young.
Nature's beautiful but seems cruel  at times. Oh. That's humans as well.

It's about survival of the fittest.  If we provide a 24/7 cafe then sparrow hawks, rats etc. will take advantage.

In a way we are 'cheating ' a bit.... About 5 miles away is a nature reserve which is a small breeding ground for the turtle doves,so I think they mind of popped in on a day out! We love the dollars doves they seem so gentle.

Are you in the south east?

Do break the ice on ponds to allow critters to breathe .  I've got that to do after breakfast, I have topped up birds' water already.  It's solid everywhere this morning.

Hey Taz,

Yes we are in Herts but on the Cambridgeshire borders. There's a small rspb reserve at Fowlmere, woods, water and open grassy areas with neighbouring fields, so get quite a variety of species, including the breeding turtle doves. There is a chalk stream too,so very clear water, so if lucky enough we get to see water voles and brown trout too. It's a nice size, and as per reserves, there is good conservation to work with all wildlife. ( sound geeky I know but I love Nature!)

U geek away  ;).   We all benefit from a walk I the sunshine - as a child of the 60s I was outdoors well wrapped up nearly all day.  We also had Welney Wash close by to visit .... Thetford Chase 40. mins away, 60 mins to the beach.  We cycled everywhere so had plenty of fresh air.

Which is why I love our garden as well as visiting City Parks - we discovered Leamington Spa last Summer  8)

Oh I love being outside too, I feel like a caged bear if so can't get outdoors. Best form of exercise. Mind and body benefits and you can see so much nature  long as you take the time to look.
Sometimes if people ' chase ' a rare animal sighting they almost forget what's around them. The mad flock of starlings have been making us laugh the last few days,  and the feisty robins defending their territories and yesterday we watched a small herd of about 20 deer running in a field next to the road we were on, including two white ones.beautiful to see.

My Dad taught me to stop.  Stand.  Listen.  I walked behind him, when he stopped, I did.

We spent a lot of time sitting by our ponds in the warmer weather, into the evening when it's nice enough.  The problem with mobile phones is, people are aiming at rather than seeing what is around them.

Even though there were plenty of sunflower hearts, the Goldfinches were busy on the lemon balm seed heads yesterday so DH took a photo through the window.
