I have been puzzled for the last 3 months and have to admit I am no wildlife expert.
We have a large tree in the garden that seems to have attracted Magpies, for the last three months there has been a strange noise like a kitten meowing and at the same time there are Magpies flapping around in the tree.
When I first heard it I thought it was their young but after not hearing it these last couple of weeks it has started again, wouldn't they have all fledged weeks ago?

Some birds have much longer breeding seasons, and some breed practically all year round, such as Collared Doves.

My adult magpies often make the meeting sound. I love the way they chitter and chatter to each other.

Young sparrows are bathing in our pond. Don't think that they realise how deep it is ........ plenty of tangled weed for them to perch in though.

Had to take a very lethargic hedgehog to a rescue place last week as it just wasn't right and was right out in the open in the middle of the day x

A beautiful white egret stalking mindfully for its supper among the gulls on the foreshore at around 6pm, after an exceptionally hot, sunny day.  The Indian summer we've so often been lucky to enjoy here for our September fortnight by the sea.  Large flocks of turnstones flying unfeasibly fast, low across the water, a flash of white as they turn in unison, the brown-black V stripe of wing exposed briefly as they tilt the other way, a single piping call audible now & then.  Mottled tortoiseshell backs over soft white bellies & their diligent foraging habit make them endearing creatures to watch, scuttling at the waters' edge each year when we visit at this time.

I wonder who calls 'shift' - bit like the Red Arrows aren't they as they twist as one.   :D

They are amazing CLKD - that they are so synchronised while flying so fast is astonishing.  :)

A dozen turnstones sitting on the breakwater half an hour ago, obligingly posed for a picture, sunlight dazzling on the sea behind.  How forgiving are modern cameras of unfiltered sunlight in all directions!  A large flock of cormorants flew over as we ate our beach picnic at 2pm, flapping frantically as is their habit, necks outstretched.  A small, pretty gull passed so low over our heads I could see the soft feathers on its underbelly, ruffled by the wind.  3 races between 2 fours of rowers on very choppy water around 3pm, a mix of male & female crew.  Unexpected & exciting to watch!  :)
